Sunday I was driving and hit something in the road. I immediately had blue smoke coming out the back so I pulled over and shut it down then had it towed to the nearest dealer. I figured no biggie I shut it down right away. The dealer called this morning and said I need an engine. I can't believe it. I was an auto adjuster for 12 years so I don't always trust shops. They're telling me at least 12k. I call my insurance company and they tell me I only have liability insurance because I didn't get it inspected by them..My understanding is that only applies to used cars. If I have to take them to court I think I can win. The obvious downside is all the hassle the upside is a new motor but I'll probably pay betterment of 10% a year but the adjuster had no idea. I'll refuse a LKQ used motor. Any adjusters who are now working let me know what you're thinking. I've been out of the business for 21 years. By the way we're talking new york state

Can I ask what insurance co? Did they inform you up front you needed an inspection? Are they charging you for full coverage?

They claimed they informed me a year after I had the car. I'm not sure what there charging me for because a lot of people got discounts because of covid. They are not sure it's going to be a problem but the person I spoke to was noncommittal there covering their butt which I don't blame them for. It's USAA I used to do work for them not terrible at all so that's probably a non issue.

I have a cousin who works for USAA corporate. You should be fine.

I just changed companies, I think I'm going to ask my agent if I need an inspection. Saved about 600 a year switching and better coverage.

If you do have to come out of pocket, try to find your local mustang technician. They may charge you a lot less for installation. Maybe you can buy the parts yourself or hit a junkyard..

Please get full coverage! I'm sure you know this

I don't know how you blow a engine by hitting something. It's lodged in between a frame. Do you have pictures?

How do you hit something and it blows a motor?

You sure the motor blowing up wasn't what you felt as hitting something?
The dealer claims it was running w/out oil for too long.

When you change companies you definitely need the inspection just not when you buy a new car and keep the same company.

If you bought the car used you need inspection upon signing with them,
if you bought the car new then no inspection. I m in NY and that s how it is here. I ve been with my company so long that they waive my inspection on used car.
Or it s just a cheap a$$ insurance company looking to deny.
Depending on what you hit I d try to do a police report too. (May be too late or just file the self reporting state form).
What do you mean that you hit "something".? Didn t go back and look at least?

Wait you own a car and have insurance on it but don't know what coverages you have?

Or have you been paying for full coverage but now they are saying you only have liability?

What does it say on the coverages page of your insurance policy?
