The dealer claims it was running w/out oil for too long.
You said " I was driving and hit something in the road. I immediately had blue smoke coming out the back so I pulled over and shut it down then had it towed to the nearest dealer. I figured no biggie I shut it down right away. "

Bang then blue smoke? No way a hit to an oil pan gonna cause that to happen.

Oil will splash onto the exhaust. instant smoke.

My problem is the 12K+ the dealer is quoting. I just went on Ford Performance and they have a crate engine (M-6007-M50C) compatible with 2018-2020, for $9500. The dealer is charging you almost $3000 for an R/R?

Yep - true.

A few years back I bought a used 94 Bronco 5.0 and not within 10 miles of driving it off the used car lot, got on highway doing 65, and BLAM, damn engine blew - popped #4 and #8 rods right through the block, ventilated the metal oil pan - and smoke screened the entire highway better than Spy Hunter ... funny thing was, that engine purred great when test driving it, with no mechanical issues at all.

At least the Dealership was nice and they sent me a check to replace the engine... I ended up doing a complete GT40 setup in it with Ford Racing headers, Crane roller rockers, etc... ran great!

As far as the insurance replacing an engine (on any vehicle), the policy wouid have to have comprehensive on it, correct? Liability is for if the owner plows into another vehicle or destroys property and stuff like that, not for replacing hard parts that failed while driving.

But it's not just the cost of the engine...

Figure in:
Labor per hour for R&R, which at most shops is $100+.

Shop supplies

Oil refill + oil filter

Coolant refill

Clutch kit R&R if MT82 - makes no sense to not do a clutch on a major engine R&R

Modern vehicle = Ford IDS reprogramming of modules/PCM

Test drive and other misc. diagnosis time (if applicable)

---
Labor is the killer...more so at shop rates.

we ll he saying he did hit something, that s why I suggested a police report, that would be an accident possibly. but we don t yet know his coverage.

What is this about having your car inspected for insurance? Never heard of this.

I had fuel contamination in my F350 the dealer wanted $20k to fix it. Insurance said they would not pay 20k to fix. I got a diesel mechanic they charged around 9k and the insurance company paid for it less my deductible.

The worst part was when I told the dealer to put it back together and a tow truck would pick it up my service guy said he could do it for under 12k.

2 years ago my wife was driving down a dark country road when a vehicle and a logging truck hit each other traveling in opposite direction. She was about a minute behind the accident and when she came around curve (55 MPH road) both vehicles were already in the ditch but a tractor tire and a battery was on the roadway which she ran over causing $5K in undercarriage damage including a punctured trans pan. Even though she only hit an object in the road it was covered by our insurance.

The only other possibility of getting reimbursed in a situation like this is:
Call State/Town/County/Province where the supposed road debris was and try to get them to reimburse for their road having such debris on it... Maybe he could go back and take pics of where it happened, maybe there is still evidence of the road debris OR oil slick to point where it happened. Maybe he hit an exposed manhole cover, etc.

I think he's SOL on personal auto insurance coverage covering the cost.

when you uy a used car they want to be sure you didn t buy something (for less$) with existing damage and then push it on them like you just did the damage.

But $3000? I'm positive they can get that engine cheaper then what Ford Performance is asking. The amount still seems steep to me. I think he needs to take it to a private shop, get away from that dealer.

I'd buy $3K of sweet tools and do it myself.

I already have all the tools...so bonus!

Same. Is this a state thing? I haven't head of it in California, Virginia, or South Carolina.
so you can buy a used Mustang that was rear ended for cheap dollars and then insure it , wait a week and say you got hit when parked and they ll fix it for you??? Must have a lot of honest people in those states.

just to be clear as to one of my last statements, my brother in law bought a brand new Audi and his insurance company made him bring it to their rep for inspection.
