My 2018 GT (built 3/18) with the MT82 has been fine. I think many of the issues with the 2018s were blown out of proportion by owners who got themselves in too deep financially and hoping for a buyback to get out from under a loan, or people just looking to make content.

I was scared of potential issues, then I stopped worrying and just drove it more.
I get that mentality, but you can’t ignore problems if they exist. I scoped all 8 cylinders and 4 of mine had scoring @1300miles…..that’s a mechanical failure in the making.

This thread may offer some ideas as to long term Coyote ownership since you’ve been out of the loop for a bit:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/long-term-coyote-5-0-owners-post-up-status-updates.225191/

There’s also been a lot of progress made with 10R80 owners finding ways to manipulate the shift points and valve pressures using Forscan and other tuning means. Those are well documented and linked to the main 10R80 Facts thread that has grown huge over the years.

As far as saying to like “this” year over “that” year - there’s absolutely no way for any of us to say if YOU end up picking “x” that the vehicle (used vehicle) will not have any issues at all - it’s a gamble that none of us can predict. You might get into another S550 w/10R80 and it won’t have nay issues at all - OR you could get in that exhibits shift issues.

The best thing you can do is take the vehicle on a long test drive, not just a round the block at 35mph drive… a GOOD length of drive where you can get the car up to highway speeds and conditions where you can feel how it will shift “normally” through many of the gears and how it will shift once put into “Sport” mode, because the shift points and valve pressure are entirely different….

Hello; I get the impulse to defend a set of mustang years of which someone already owns. I also get the "concern" a prospective buyer has when buying a used performance car. Too many threads & posts citing problems. Too many threads about a used Mustang purchase having terminal or near terminal problems. A followed a thread recently (actually three or more threads by the same member about the same car). The member presented us with lots of evidence the engine & transmission have serious problems. Do not know if that member kept the car or has passed the issues on.

For several years I planned to get a Porsche Cayman. Work and a lack of a place to keep one had me put off the purchase. Then the IMS bearing debacle in over ten years of the Boxter six engine made me glad I had not bought. So for a few years I only considered a 2009 or newer model used. Then the turbo four after 2016 ended my desire for one.

What is my point? I would like to have some resource to be able to have an idea of the better years of used Mustang GT to consider. At this point the new production cars have too much of what I call technology. To be clearer tech which does not make the cars better. Touch screens, electronic parking brakes and such.
A thread sticks in my mind. It was about the mechanism which makes the windows go down a bit when the doors are opened and then back up when a door is closed. I looked for that action next time i looked at a Mustang. I saw why such an action is needed. A thing worrisome about it was one of the cleverer & knowledgeable members on this forum was having trouble working the fault out.
I recall the mechanical answer to the problem on cars from the 1950's. A chromed metal flap with a spring mechanism. something i could repair.

Is the answer to have cylinders scoped and do mildly invasive compression tests and such on a used car? Some sellers will not go for that.

But I like the idea of a long test drive. I tried such on the last old car I test drove. The seller took me for a ride. He offered to let me drive. I handed him a twenty (This was before current gas prices) with the idea to pay for the miles I wanted to drive. Did not work out for me as the brakes were not safe so I cut the drive short.

What lead up to scoping the cylinders?
