I got a question, so if ford can detect a tune, an ECU cost around $700. So why not just buy an ECU and tune and swap it with the stock ECU, and everytime you go in to the dealership you put the stock ECU back in the car.

Can someone shed some light

So...not sure if that's a serious question?

But why not save $700 and just remove the tune from the ECU so that it returns to stock settings? I've done this twice with my Cobb AP3 when I took my 2015 ebm for oil changes. Dealership didn't give me any hassle.

It would probably be need to be programmed each time and will reset most if not all settings every time you swap it out. They may be tied to VIN #'s, etc. Not worth it in my opinion. Just only bring the dealer in for warranty work and you should be fine, or find a mod friendly dealer. Just flash the car back to stock everytime you bring it in. Even if it has a flash counter, oh well.

They probably won't care for oil changes. It's warranty work where they might look for reasons to skimp out on it because they get paid a lot less for warranty work than they do for customer billed work.

ITS A SERIOUS QUESTION!.... you went in for an oil change, if you go in with a blown engine they will go thru your ECU and definitely check if it was tuned!

Falcon i see your point, but isnt programming basically flashing it?, and it doesnt seem vin # specific

Brother you can take the tune off the car and go back to stock. They don't know you have a different tune, it shows shows a run timer of how long that tune has been running. If they question, the time tell them you disconnected your battery that would reset the run timer. If you blow your engine, you have a whole set of issues, but to pay $700 to carry a ecu on spare is insane..... I mean why not carry soared of everything if the engine blows? Save your money, use the right person for the tuner and don't have your engine blow, be smart don't flash your car right before you take your car in.

It was just an idea to preserve the warrenty because th ECU counts how many times you flashed it

No I'm telling you that's not true, it does not count how many times you flashed it. It has a run timer of how long that tune has been running on the car

Just an FYI I have prob flashed my my ecu 67 times, ford is replacing my turbo under warranty, tune not related to the problem. I reflashed two days before appointment, no issues. Plus I asked for tech friend before I brought it in, it doesn't count the tunes

Only a rumor.
The truth is, it is a run timer. All a dealer can see is how long its been since the ECU was reset and what programming/tune the car is currently running.

Keep your Cobb so in the car. If anything goes wrong, which if Adam tunes you car, it was not the tune's fault and would have broken anyways, unmarry the AP. Then disconnect the battery and have it towed to the dealer. Make them reconnect the battery to trouble shoot and they will know why there is no run data on the ECU.
