Worse case senerio I can use my parents truck if the mustang doesn't work. Sure I can financly afford the mustang and the jetski but that does not mean I can just afford a beater truck nor do I want one.

Exactly. Why bother owning and maintaining something you don't want when the mustang is completely capable of handling the job. Even Ford says towing 1000lbs is fine.

BTW...It's a Mustang. Not a vintage Ferrari. In 5yrs and 50k miles they will be selling in the high teens.

Mike A. ,
I agree some folks are unreasonably over the top wierded out about 'the idea' of towing with a Mustang 4,6 or 8 Cyl. Now if you want unreasonable, go here:

http://priuschat.com/threads/prius-towing-travel-trailer.127797/

You can imagine the fear folks on the Prius forum about towing 'anything' with a Prius. PLease save you fingers and our eyes and lets not go on that side track. Lots of small four cyl cars are rated for 1,000 lb towing cap. That seems to be the default spec. It's more about brakes, suspension and wheel base than engine power for safe towing.

You're absolutely correct, power is the last thing looked at when it comes to towing capacities. Personally, I wouldn't recommend towing with a unibody vehicle at all.

Why would I buy a truck when I want a Mustang? I don't need to tow a ski boat...[/

My opinion won't stop you from doing what you want, I'm just trying to persuade you not to destroy a perfectly good car.

Mustangs were never meant to be an only car. They were meant to be a fun and affordable sports car for the average person who has other means of transporting his things for work and play. Towing your track tires on a motorcycle trailer is one thing, but towing a personal watercraft is another ball park entirely. Yes, it cab safely tow 1k lbs, but that rating is only given as a standard across the car spectrum. That does not mean the vehicle was designed to be towed with.

So your opinion is that even though Ford puts out official publications stating what the Mustang can tow it is actually harmful to the vehicle in some way and will "destroy" it.

https://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/15RV&TT_Ford_Mustang_Sep30.pdf

In your opinion what part of the car will be harmed by towing a jet ski that has an 800lb weight (trailer included)?

I'm sure that's exactly what Ford had in mind when they designed the Mustang with 4 seats and a big trunk...

Please tell me what said rear seats are good for, other than to claim four person seating? Yes, the trunks are spacious, but pony cars are built on sedan platforms, always have been regardless of the manufacturer.

The rear substructure is meant to crumple in event of linear force being applied to it. What do you think is happening when you stop your 800-1k lbs sea doo? It may not have a direct impact, but it will weaken the structure under prolonged use.

You should probably get a hold of Ford then. Their engineers must have overlooked this aspect.

Look, if you want to tow with it, there's no way I can stop you. It's legal to do so, and a requirement to provide towing capacities for every car, even the smart car... Also, if you're running a tuned Eco, be sure not to tow it with a performance tune loaded. I'd hate to see you screw up your engine and substructure simultaneously.

That isn't true. From having a few VW's I know there there are some models that have published towing capacities in Europe but those same models in the US do not. If a car doesn't come with a hitch or ball mount there is nothing that says the manufacturer has to publish tow ratings.

Seeing as I drive about 7k miles a year or less I'm not to worried. Yes mustang is a sports car but I have never seen it as a problem to tow a jetski. Maybe I'm wrong but I like the idea of my fun daily sports car towing my jetski toy. You did get me worried about towing with a tuned Eco though. I'm assuming any towing should be on stock tune.

lots of opinions and anecdotal talk with no sources - ford officially supports in the manual 'towing capacity up to 1000lbs'

just wait for manufacturers to come up with hooks now.
enjoy life, go skiidooooing :)

I've yet to see a car that does not have a factory tow rating. At least, since the early 00's.

I'd post links to references, but the wifi in West Africa really isn't all that great. I'll be back stateside tomorrow evening, and I'll send you the correct links. I'm working off the app, which still takes a minute or so to post a reply.

some failure links or photos would be cool.

lots of pics of successful towing and even a boat launch - so thats not fun!

it would be entertaining to see and read what not to do

Lol, will do.

This has been a good way to kill time while waiting on my flight. Now, I'm off to Paris, I dig up what I find when I get back to Louisiana. Happy towing...
