Was getting on the freeway and accelerating at conservative pace. Heard a bad noise, low oil light came on and lots of smoke. Threw into neutral, coasted to side, turned off motor and made sure the engine wasn't on fire. As car was getting on the flatbed, you can clearly see a chunk of the motor is gone.

2015 Ecoboost with Livernois tune, catch can, intercooler, downpipe and CAI. Just outside of powertrain warranty. 91 octane is the best gas we got here, tank half full. Replaced low side fuel pressure sensor about 10k miles ago. Adult driven, never been to the track and rarely ever saw WOT.

I called Livernois and they told me they had no idea how that could happen and that it would be 12-13k to beef up and replace engine. I have no interest in sinking $13k into a $14k car. Any advice on where to start to get it fixed??

sorry to hear that! i had an ecoboom earlier this year.

i ended up getting a build motor from Adam at Tune+ (wasn't the cheap option for sure.)

a cheaper option i found was buying a used motor off eBay or something. but i didn't want to risk having to deal with this again.

good luck- i hope it works out for you.

Like HTX above said, go with a used engine if $ is an issue. Found this place on Ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-Ford-...h=item2ce1407009:g:LhMAAOSwzDFcEwhZ:rk:1:pf:0 with a 6 month warranty. I don't know them nor am i endorsing them. This is just an example. Next, find a trusted local shop/mechanic that can do the swap for you. If not, call a couple of local Ford dealers and see what they would charge to do the swap.

Did you hear any funny sounds like pinging(detonation) before it let go? Did you fill up with regular instead of premium by chance? I usually stick to Mobil premium but every now and again will hear slight detonation going up a grade-like an entrance ramp to the highway.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

LKQ sales motors on ebay for a few grand. Thats the route I would go if I was in your shoes, but I would do the work myself also in my driveway.
Swap the motors, pretty simple plug and play, and if it were me, switch to a Cobb AP, and get a better tune from a different tuner.

Just bought an LKQ motor on EBay for $2000. Was complete longblock, even had flywheel, clutch still on it. 6month warranty. The swap is easy if you are at all mechanical. Sorry to hear about your issues. :(

Just a side note, my cars motor let go at 61,000 miles also. No tune, 100% stock motor but previous owner ran the crap out of it with crap gas.

The 2015/16 Spain motors seem to blow more often. Or it could simply be because they’ve been around longer and rack up more miles. I worry about the ecoboom everyday in my 18

After owning one and now reading these posts, it seems to me that maybe ford should have been a little less aggressive in their quest for the 310hp number just to out do the numbers of the previous GT's. I would much rather have a 290 rating on 91 with a touch less compression(less chance for detonation) than having 310 on 93 octane. These motors are not cheap to purchase so i ask why are they not made of components that can handle the rigors of everyday driving, heat, occasional bad fuel and spirited driving. As an owner of 2 Ford 6.0 diesels, this is not the first time i have been down this road with Ford products. I love the brand but it just makes me wonder if the 2.3 was rushed into production like the 6.0 was. Sorry i got off topic here.

Only real concern is I monitor the low side fuel rail on my AP3, and it goes up over 100 probably every time I get in my car. Almost always if I get on it. Regularly sits in the high 80’s low 90’s. After reading Adams eco boom thread that was one concern for the sensor being faulty.

If you are running a tune, do you data log - if so, what does that run show before or during the block ventilation?

2016 Spanish motors? Where the hell do you get your information?

Mid 2015 and beyond are Cleveland engines and when ECU tuned and otherwise basterdized,.they fail at a much higher rate than stock, non ECU tuned engines. I found that 90% of failures were ECU tuned along with other mods and in some cases user error.

@phx23 Sorry to hear that man, What spark plugs and oil have you been running?

@Interceptor That's a load of crap. Using the cheapest parts you can buy, rushing production, not testing properly and cost cutting leads to parts breaking prematurely. These engines are failing more than average that is pretty clear by now.
If you remove all the ECU tuned/mod failures from the list I don't think these engines are failing at an abnormally high rate. The 2.3 is.used in several cars and SUVs and there are no reports of problems.with the engine. Many of the problems with the 2.3 are a result of ECU tuning and other mods IMO.

Some engines will fail, that is just a fact of life but when there is a defect it is pretty obvious. For instance, the new 5.0 is an engine with problems. Just visit the issue, and repairs section and you will find a lot of 5.0 engine problems.

What problems does the 2.3 have when leftl stock, unmodified, non ecu tuned? I just don't see any evidence that the 2.3 has any defect or high failure rates until ECU tuned or modified.
