I understand your post wasn't directed at me, but I had to answer.

Do you own an MT-82? What is it exactly about automatics that you hate?.

Driving should be fun, not sterile or boring. Automatics are too easy to drive and they put me to sleep. I don't have enough control over the car. I don't like how and when they choose to shift. I don't like pulling up to a light and needing to keep my foot on the brake or put the car in park.

Is it because they are more reliable?.

I've had one trans that failed and it was in a crappy Honda Accord. I should have known better than to buy something from Honda. Stupid decision on my part. No Ford transmission has failed on me.

Probably not, but I don't care about fast shifts that are performed by a machine. I get satisfaction from a fast shift that I performed though.

People always use the word notchy. Maybe they are accustomed to the junk transmissions Jap companies put in their cars. My favorite transmission I've owned (and driven a significant amount) is my Tremec 3550. So many people call it notchy. I think it has a nice, positive feel when it goes into gear.

I've driven enough automatic equipped vehicles to know I don't want one. Maybe some day if my knee can't hold up any more I'll buy an automatic. I will be really sad that day. :tsk:

I've been driving manual transmissions since I was 9 when my Dad taught me how on our '30 Chevrolet. Nothing like learning to double clutch an unsynchronized box...these newer trannies are practically idiot proof. Started power shifting on an old slant 6 3 speed column shift Plymouth when I was 15.

Current manuals are my 93 Mustang and finishing up a TKO600 swap into my BB Victor-headed 67 Plymouth.

I'm not fond of converter slippage...I like the feeling of a direct link in balancing the power transfer into the chassis w/ my left foot.

Oh, and a 'std' transmission is still acceptable verbiage Tom...I'm 37, so I don't consider myself an 'old guy'.

I know it's not me u r talking to, rather defending your stance against the post that seemed like an auto lover attacking manuals...but the part about turning in your man card because of an auto hurts. I never had an opportunity to learn manual growing up. Parents drove auto so that's all I knew. Didnt learn until my uncle set up a track day and driving lesson when I was well into my twenties. It's a bit emasculating to consider yourself a car enthusiast and not know how to drive manual but I'm ready to jump into it full on with this car! Lol my wife drove one growing up summers around Chicago and she keeps telling me I'm gonna hate it in traffic but that's a chance I'm willing to tAke!

I had the TH350 in my first car, a 1976 Cutlass, fail. That was my fault though. I'm not going to blame the transmission. That was my first and last GM vehicle. I wanted a Ford and my dad talked me into it. It was a nice solid car but couldn't spin the tires with a 350 ci engine. At 16 that was a priority!

I'm sure you realize it's all in fun. In all seriousness, I think manual is fun in traffic. You can play with it. But then when I'm in the car I'm not one of those people doing everything else other than driving. For me it isn't a PITA to change gears. It's something fun to do.

My daily driver F150 H-D edition has an auto, thats great.

But in my toy, I want to drive it, could not imagine it without a stick.

But for some who have hard enough time driving, maybe auto is better

Personally, I enjoy the level of concentration and control it takes to drive a stick. I think driving in traffic should involve your full engagement. Not to say that most people who drive an automatic aren't engaged, it's just that it is very easy to disengage, which many people do.

A manual transmission makes the difference between actually enjoying the act of driving and simply transporting yourself from point A to point B.

I wish the GT350 was available with some type of dual clutch transmission since that is what I'd buy given that my car will be daily driven ~75% of the time. It's one of the reasons I'm leaning towards an M4 with the DCT. However, the GT350 being manual-only is not a deal breaker for me.

Thankfully the 997 GT3 only came with a manual. Given the choice, I'd take the slower car with the manual trans.

Pretty sure he's saying the statement is ignorant, because, well, that's what he said. It is not necessarily the case that driving an auto is simply A to B transportation...which seems obvious...

Drove a C63 AMG with paddle shifters that is technically an auto. It was anything but uneventful.

That said, I DD a manual in wretched DC traffic and it does make it more of an event, which I enjoy.

My 6R80 is fun when I want it to be.

I am talking about the reliability of the 6R80, the MT-82 gets no where close.
Auto trans has taken over 1000+ rwhp STOCK. Mt-82 has problems shifting with a tune.

The 6R80 will shift quicker and more consistent than you.
There is no pain greater than a missed gear......none.

You claim to "beat the crap" out of your mt-82, what's done to your car? About how many passes do you have down the 1/4 mile?

If you are not having high RPM issues your car must of never seen high rpms. Emasculating? What would you do when a emasculated man out runs your manual?

Helper spring, you were just plain hurt. Removing the helper spring is nothing more than a bandaid for a junk transmission.

I call the MT-82 notchy, because it is. I went with the MGW / JHR clutch line / amsoil clutch fluid bandaid and I still to this day hate the transmission.

Secret 12th gear in the MT-82, when you find it.....you will know. Look into the transmission section, mt-82 issues fill the section.

I wanted to like my manual transmission, but the transmission loved to let me down. I knew it was never going to hold the power I had planned for it. So I picked up a 2015 with a 6R80, it has been amazing since day 1. It's cheaper to go auto , than to replace the mistake that is the mt-82.

Driving stick is not amazing feat. Broken parts are never fun.

I like what works. We are not talking about manual / auto. We are talking about the 6R80 / MT-82. I LOVE manual, but the mt-82 is not worth its weight in dirt. again....i still own both. From experience, i know the MT-82 is garbage. I am not surprised ford did not place this mistake in the GT350.

Whoa......i do not hate manuals, I dislike the mt-82.
Do some research and take a look at the transmission section of the forum. I gave up PP package to NOT get the mt-82.

Here are a few reasons why the FACTORY 6r80 is so amazing. No your mt-82 can't do this.

Its an acquired skill to shift a manual transmission and stick the shifts to the point where you can lay down times that are difficult for the best automatics to match. The thing is... its all about skill and timing. But, its not unheard of to see manuals smack down autos. Yes modern Auto's have an advantage but, thats mostly on the strip. On the street from a dig it's likely going to the auto since the hole-shot is almost always in its favor...but from a roll...its a drivers game. And I'll put my money on a manual with a good driver any day. Heck with a good driver it could be a good day on a strip as well. But, on the strip I do see where the auto's have the edge..... On a road course. not so much.



If you like video games and wanna just gun it and go. Then yeah I guess you'll like an auto. If you Drag race for a hobby and/or do it professionally to augment your income... then you go with an auto.

If you are an enthusiast and enjoy rowing your own... then...Its gotta be a manual.
