I went to the dealer today and he said to put in a custom order i need to put a down payment of $1000 when i order and if i don't want the car upon delivery i lose the $1000. Is this true? I read that we don't need to pay anything until we take delivery. Someone please clear this up. Thanks.

If i were you I would find another dealer. You do not need to put any money down.

You gotta ask if it's refundable. I would never put down a non refundable deposit

It has to be refundable or it's illegal in pretty much every state.

Dealer that I've purchased 3 cars from in the past 3 years, along with 4 from my family, told me the same thing. Told them I wasn't feeling the love anymore. They tried to come up with all these excuses why I shouldn't go anywhere else (higher doc fees, bad customer service, etc.) I went and found another dealer (actually one of the biggest in the area) that didn't want anything down for an order. Doc fees waived, awesome customer service, immediate response to my questions.....I'm feeling the love now!

I'm currently deployed so I called my Ford dealer in Seattle. They were pretty quick with everything, and they required a credit card that wasn't going to be charged until pickup (or I'm guessing not pickup?) $1000 dollars. I don't know if this is common or not.

German cars.
It's at the dealers discretion. Most larger dealers who know they can move cars work with refundable deposits. Smaller dealers or scumbags like to make profits where they can, they'll eventually sell your car if you decide to not purchase it once it arrives. Honestly best advice, like most people mentioned before, is find a dealer who will do a refundable deposit no matter what. There's also dealers who do refundable deposits only when the actual car is sold so make sure you get all the details. (Meaning your car arrives, you decide not to take it, then they have to sell it first then refund you)

It's fully legal for a dealer in any state to collect a non refundable deposit on special ordered vehicles.
Basically with your deposit you're committing to a vehicle built for you. If dealer gets stuck with that vehicle then you lose your deposit.
Not all dealers are that strict with that rule though and most will work something out with customer cause you rarely see anyone put a deposit on an order and then back out.
This is no different than places like Best Buy charging you a restocking fee (15%) for special order that you no longer want or return shortly after purchase.

For s custom order, yes a deposit is required. Refendable, it would depend on the dealer. I would ensure that it is indeed refundable. We are talking about the 50th year of production for a Mustang. Do you think any dealer is going to have a hard time selling it.....we're not talkng about a stock f150, something like that.

This is not true. It's all up to the dealer. I have a retail order LE and my dealer didn't require any deposit at all for it. Depends on your dealer and your relationship with them.

Typical around south Louisiana is 500$ refundable. Some dealers vary from that. My dealer is normally 500$ refundable also but I can usually just tell them what I want and wait.

I don't see what the big deal is with paying a deposit anyway. It's better for those of us who are serious as the system isn't clogged with orders from those who have no intention of taking delivery.

It's great that some dealers will do a zero deposit, but it would be chaos if they all did that.

my dealership asked me for $500 to hold the car in my name. This protects the dealership from having competitors come in and hit them with a bunch of orders they do not intend to buy. a week ago, i changed my mind and upgraded to a stock order that was closer to delivery, he just transitioned my deposit to that car.

I agree with that. And it will ensure they hold a car for you and not sell it out from under you.
