Do you have a gap below the shift ball?

There's a thread going on over the regular S550 forum here: https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/bullitt-shift-knob-install-issue.130835/ .

For reference, my car looks exactly like the OP's picture on post #1. Somebody posted a Bullitt ball on post #7, and #11, which have no gap. I'm afraid to try to turn my knob clockwise any more, for fear of applying too much torque to the shifter, and messing something up. But would love to have it if not flush with the reverse lockout, at least like 1mm above, so it's not visible. What do you guys think? And how is yours from the factory? Thx.

Hey, let's not derail the thread :D. Everybody with a Bullitt has a ball, so please post if yours has a gap from the factory, or not. And about how much, if you do. Thank you :).

Man, I thought I was fastidious. How do you guys even notice this? Here's a picture of my shift ball with & without flash. Looks fine to me.

I believe I have a gap, I have taken mine off several times and played with another ball, I mean shift knob. I do remember stopping because the knob got quite tight. I'll double check in the morning.

Yep, I have a gap. I could probably go tighter and I tried, but when I had a half of a rotation left, It was super tight and I didn't want to F something up. My dealer removes them on the lot because they get stolen. Maybe yours did too and they just tightened it until it was snug.

If there is a gap, something's not right. Both the oem and the black Ford Racing shift ball replacement fit perfectly.

Yep; yours is perfect. That's typical; guys who don't give a crap have it perfect. And the ones of us who do, they're not. Ha ha.

Your theory about dealers removing them is quite possible. But the fact yours is already as tight as it can go and still has a gap means not all shift knobs are drilled/tapped uniformly. Will remove mine, to see how tight it was, and count the turns. Then take some measurements, and see how deep are the threads. If I have a tap of the correct size, will give it a go until it bottoms out, and see if I can take the gap out. And would lower the shift lever a little bit more, which would be perfect :). Will keep you posted, but what I'll NOT do is drill the knob any more. Will be back home Friday.

Whoa there buddy! I give a crap. I give a crap so much that I passed on several Bullitts for as ridiculous a reason as, "This is not my car" I left multiple salesmen dumbfounded when I walked away from great deals on cars with no other explanation than, "I don't feel it, this is not my car"

On the subject of shift balls, yesterday I purchased the black Ford Performance shift ball at Summit Racing. Glad I decided to install it in their parking lot. It is not weighted to start with as is the OE shift ball. Then, even though it has the correct threads, it is not drilled nor threaded as deeply. Thus, in order to align the shift pattern correctly, the top of the shift column will pop the engraved dome off the body of the ball. Not good.

I want a red shift knob to compliment my red and black color scheme. I got one from CJ Pony and its not weighted and its doesn't fit well. Back to looking ...... I'm leaning towards one from Raceseng.
