When mine was delivered I gave them very specific instructions what they could do and what they could not do. When the car arrived at the dealer I met with the guys that checked it in and went over those instructions with him directly. They did a great job following every request I made. They also knew if certain specific instructions where not followed they would be keeping the car and ordering me a different one too.

Any dealer worth buying the car from better do a great job on delivery and prep. OR they can keep the car.

Unless you live in Australia and delivery takes 1 to 1.5 years from time of order

I would just tell them not to drill the front plate or put a dealer sticker on.
X2. I doubt their gonna do a worse job washing it than me. I never would have noticed how F&@ked up the paint was if the car was dirty! My dealership had to repaint my car:

meh. it's a freaking car, not a Monet. Let them prep it, then you can detail it on your own in a few weeks.

The dealer prep is apart of the PDI. I would strongly advise having the dealer do the PDI, just tell them not to wash it. If there is damage, they will fix it. If you refuse PDI, you might be denied any future fixes.

Make sure you inspect the car thoroughly before taking delivery.
Agree

Even though my dealer is VERY cool with me since I buy my cars from them, I let them at least wash it. I look it over with a fine tooth comb. Whatever swirls they leave on my car I can polish them out anyways. I have my cars shining better than when they left the OEM paint booth anyways. If I find scratches and dents, that's on them though.

Mr. Larry says tell the dealer not to prep the car

Larry is definitely the man. That's the kind of guy I want to have as a close friend ("Hey Larry, come on over this weekend, we've got some work to do!"). Also, did anyone notice that the McLaren has the hated Pirelli P-Zeros???

Saw some brand new cars in a dealership showroom just a couple days ago - swirl marks everywhere thanks to the 'wash' they do. You can expect no less than this stellar service for the wash on your car.

Called a GM friend of mine about this and he said the following, we get this request all the time and its no problem, but if you take it away unpacked and un-prep/ed and later find something they "will not" fix it without the manufacturer authorizing them to be paid. Once you drive it off the lot its yours and you own it, all of it. He did say he has customers that are in attendance when cars are unpacked as he called it and washed so thats an option also.

This is a dealer selling high end cars, 80K plus.

Then again I dont much care, before I take delivery I look at it really well indoors never had a problem.

In the next 5 weeks I will be hopefully taking delivery of my 2016 GT. Trying to decide if I should have the dealer prep the entire car before delivery or should I tell them not to wash or prep the exterior so as not to take a chance of any swirl marks in the paint.

What is everyone's thoughts on this. Is this too obsessive? I normally would not think much about this until I see all these posts on this forum and it shows how much people really care about their Mustangs. Not sure what my local dealer's policy is. I definitely don't want them to slap that dealer sticker on the car.....they can just give me a shirt instead :-)
Had mine prepped before pick-up, the car was stunning! Took it back a week later to have it detailed and the workers were drooling over the car when I came to pick it up. The owner of the dealership son wanted to buy my car, thought that they were pulling my leg but they were serious. It's your car man, don't base decisions off of suggestions from the web.

Enjoy!

They are selling you a new car. That's the business they are in. Do you think they are going to screw it up by washing and prepping it? This is also what they do. Just let them take care of it. Once you drive your dirty car off the lot, it is YOUR problem. How do they know what you may have done to it when you were washing it? This is really such a Non issue.
Besides...How can you properly inspect the car before signing off on it if it is dirty? You really can't.

It can look shiny and make everyone say wow...But the point is the clear coat will be swirled from their hand jobs with gritty towels.

I agree with this, there is no reason to be so critical of a wash and peeling off the covering tape, unless you wanted to do it for fun. Truth is there was a few customers who preferred to have this treatment when they came in, and truth was everyone shook their heads when they saw how critical these people were...

The guy who bought the ford GT... K I get it.. The first Shelby in the dealer or the KR... I Get it... But a mustang gt Eco or v6... Not so much, these cars will be dime a dozen soon enough and parked at grocery stores for people to smash their doors into yours, hail in poor weather etc etc.

Each day each mile the value goes down... Was ph the car nicely, take care of it, and drive it. ENJOY the car to the fullest, otherwise keep the money in the bank get a focus and go fishing or something.. Stop worrying about the tiniest swirl that may end up in the paint... I love cars to death but man, they are only man made machines and metal...

Have at it *prepares flame suit* :D

Well, At 40 grand for my fully loaded eco vert, I doubt it will lose the value that you assume. Or at least, not as fast as you think. And that price was with the Z plan, which took off around 5 grand.
