I was washing up the baby this weekend as it hit 57 in Indy when I started on the exhaust tips I pushed my sponge back on them slipped and the damn thing sliced my thumb up by the nail! Had no idea these exhaust tips were so dang sharp! Must be a Wild Mustang! LOL Did clean up nice tho.

Oh, yeah, those exhaust tips are really sharp. You must be careful with them.
My Mustang bit me recently, too. I was closing the passenger's door after my daughter had got in the car, holding the door by its edge, like I had done hundreds of times before, only this time my pinky finger, I don't know how, was on the wrong side of the door, and I slammed the door on it.
So now I must live with this hideous spot on my nail for the next couple of months. Yuck! :frown:

I have been bit by those tips on more than one occasion. I still have a slice on my pinky from the last wash. I think some Mach I tips would solve this. 🤨

Whose idea was it to make those things so damn sharp?? This could be a class action lawsuit!! (Joking)
It took 2 different occasions of really fine deep slices for me to wake up and get rid of them. Perfect excuse to upgrade the exhaust! It's the worst trying to clean the car and then start rubbing blood all over it. Those are cuts that require bandaids!

Unless you already have the Race Red one. LOL

I posted these messages on another thread :

I didn't polish mine, but I smoothed the sharp edges, removed all the underseal overspray (UK car) and applied an even brushed finish :

I suppose for a tip as basic as they are, it's how they should have prepped them from the factory ...

Just the small sanding drum like this :

I used a fine grit and made sure it was pre-used (less aggressive and takes a bit longer, but more forgiving in the case of an error / slip).

It's difficult to get around the tips with the 3M pad but this method works a treat :
  • Cut your 3M pad (I used the green type) into a 1" strip.
  • Get an old dressing gown tie and lay it out flat.
  • Place you 1" wide 3M pad on it (it will stick a bit like weak Velcro).
  • Flip it all over and warp it in a U shape over the tip.
  • Add tension and push / pull the gown tie ends - kind of like one of those street shoe buffer guys polishing the toe section of a shoe.
The 3M pad will be held on the inside of the gown tie up against the tip and it will give a nice even pattern, that with a bit of manoeuvring can be put all around the tips. The plastics and other tip are also protected from the 3M pad by the outer side of the gown tie.

If have have done a crap job of explaining that just let me know and I will snap a photo - that will make the method very obvious :like:

Hope that helps :like:

Been cut by those a few times. Learned to respect the beast. Who knew detailing was dangerous work. Adds to the mistique that great sound comes from a dangerous place.

Happened to me on my old mustang when swapping the fuel filter. I reached down to grab it and the exhaust tip slit my forearm open. Although I didn't realize how bad until fuel ran down my arm and got into the cut. I yelled quite a few choice words. It's now a permanent scar lol

Nice work WD! Tips look brand new and professionally done. How many miles have you logged on the car since taking ownership of it?

Thanks :like:

Owned from new with 1400 miles in a little over a year.

The tailpipes were done last September, but to be honest they still look the same. Remember that the euro's have cats and GPF's so even the inside of the pipes are clean, the valves look like new even though they are mostly open as I default to track exhaust.

The low mileage isn't a surprise for me. It was bought as a second fair weather / pleasure use only car. My daily car is ten years old now and has 62k on it so only approx 6k per year and that was before covid / lockdown / homeworking (still only on three days a week in the office) came into play :frown:

As it doesn't get used for mundane duties though, every mile is a 'fun' one :sunglasses:

If it's any indication on usage, I don't let the car warm up idling and I don't use it to sit in traffic idling, my lifetime gas mileage is 13.44 and they are large 'UK' gallons (11.19 US mpg) ...
