Curious what your cylinder head temps are averaging. What are they during driving and what are they during idle?

Mine are around 203-207 while driving and spike up to 220 while idle.

189 tops most of the time for me...because of the Reische 170* thermostat. Probably spiked higher than that before the install.

How much was the thermostat and was it hard to install?

Here is a link. I found mine on another site for a bit cheaper, but I cant remember where and it wasn't a huge difference in price. It was one of the first mods I did. It was for prepping for boost.

https://www.lethalperformance.com/reische-performance-ford-50-170-performance-thermostat-gen-2.html

It's a really easy install. The video is for a GT, but exact same concept.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I read that you need a tune after the install otherwise you risk engine detonation or increased engine wear. Can you attest to that?

No tune, but I am also not driving my car, lol. If you want your mind at ease then send in a new data log to your tuner and tell them the upgrade.

I actually haven't tuned my vehicle yet. I was hoping to keep it stock for now.

Honestly you will be fine. I ran mine for 10 thousand miles before tuning. You really should just spring for a tune. Your missing out, lol.

One day for sure. I was actually wanting to get new dampers next, seeing as I'm on lowering springs and the OEM ones.

Easy enough install, but I did mine at the same time as the ported intakes and wasn't draining my radiator or anything so I just set up jugs to catch as much fluid as I could when I popped the cover off.

As far as needing to be tuned, temps will stay lower after the tune update (because the fans are reconfigured) but it definitely still does it's job before that (lets say it spiked up to 197 instead of 225).

What is the concern about 225 degree cylinder head temperature?

Typically I’ve been at 205 in 70-80 ambient temperatures. Is that normal operating for our engine?

@cyclonetron

Have had both a v6 and gt, this is how I followed CHT for both

195-210 your fine
210-220 your a little warm
220-230 your hot
230+ I'm concerned

The higher the CHT the increase chance of detonation(knock) so the lower the better. I would definitely upgrade to the 170* tstat it's cheap, real easy to install, and keeps the engine cooler which allows for more timing. With the tstat my temps are 187-192 usually sitting at 190.

You will need at add coolant after draining the radiator the gt took 1 1/2 gals not sure about the v6. You can also reuse what you drain if it's not dirty.

What about sitting in traffic. Do those numbers still apply to being idle?
