Why do some guys have to do this regularly and some not at all?

The last ngauge firmware update Lund released allows it to do a crank relearn.
That is a GREAT question! Being nerdy, I want to know. I hope someone has an in-depth answer. I don't have much time for it -- apparently there's a guy named Ray with FRPP who can give some good answers -- probably some others as well.

I just did one. I installed powerpack 3 months ago and had no issues afterwords so I left it alone. Went to the track last weekend and had a bit of timing pulled when shifting from 3-4. So I did one a few minutes ago.
Now to my point. When I started the relearn I blipped over 4k like 15-20 times the mil light stayed on. It was rich as fuck and popping like crazy. Then I noticed smoke coming from the passenger side. Shut the engine down checked it out and everything looked fine. Started back up and the light was still on. So I restarted the crank relearn and first or second blip it was good.
Has anyone else had the smoke issue? 36000 miles I run octanium often. Seemed like it was just rich as f and got hotter than ever before and burned some shit off. I'm guessing I was out of time or phase with the cams from the factory. Willing to bet I pick up some power and time. Going to go pull a log and then swap my plugs to ROR14LGS then relog.
