I was originally considering the v6 as I had a 2014 v6 before, but they're hard to come by with a manual and my color choice without ordering from the factory, which is now closed for 2015.

I'm considering a 2015 EcoBoost but have some concerns.

  • What's the boost power band feel like? - My dad has a 2011 EcoBoost F-150 and I drive it quite frequently. On acceleration from 0 its very mild for the first few moments and then suddenly boost kicks in and its quite aggressive. Is the boost power band in the EcoBoost Mustang smoother?
  • What is being done about the intake valve issue on EcoBoost engines (or any DI turbo motor)? - As you guys may or may not know direct injected engines get buildup on the intake valves due to the design, after a while this buildup can cause misfires and other issues. In non turbo motors you can use intake cleaners and do other sorts of things to help prevent and clean up this build up. On turbo motors you can't as the exhaust is too hot for the turbo and chunks of the buildup can't freely go through the turbo without damaging it. The only solution Ford has so far is pulling the head and completely replacing the intake valves, not an easy or cheap job, especially after the warranty is up.

Thoughts anybody?

Dual valve catch can to help prevent the build up (or dual cans). And supplemental port injection or water/meth injection to keep the valves clean.

Any reading you can suggest on the supplemental port injections/kits?

You'd have to look at Focus ST boards right now for that. No kits yet for our cars, although I've heard a few companies are working on it.

Stratified auto and SpeedPerformance both have kits for other cars and may have them for ours at some point.

car kicks good at low rpm but dies off at 5k+ rpm. youll have to get the valves cleaned eventually even with a catch can. good gas mileage. lots of aftermarket support.

Power band will feel like a V6 until it starts to choke top end. Tune seems to make the feel of the car night and day from what I have read. Holding out for a P2 kit or higher personally.

It's very engaging to drive lower in the power-band, but falls flat around 5K like others are saying

A tune will significantly improve the power band, and there's a host of upgrades available for the EB.

The V6 won't have as many aftermarket options as the EB

You bring up important potential issues down the road, but like some are saying there are ways to add some protection.

You just need to go test drive one if you haven't already.I went to the dealer to drive a V6. Really liked it, was ready to buy it. Decided last minute to drive the EcoBoost since they had one. Ended up driving it home.

Yes!, Ecoboost all the way, great power, great mpg.

I am in the process of installing a catch can, which one do you recommend?

If anything, driving like you stole it will produce lots of carbon and dirty the exhaust tips.

Power is OK, mostly feels good in mid range. Top end not so much, especially if it is hot outside

Very good mid range and decent low end so really good for city and street acceleration. Top end it dies off at 5k. I think people said it was due to the turbo being too small. Either way the cars have tons of aftermarket support, tune is very impressive. Very good gas mileage.

Drove my friends 5.0 coyote (2012) and the coyote has more low end and it keeps pushing up top. More power but definitely more gas. The ecoboost feels very very smooth when you accelerate and very little turbo lag.

I am pretty certain had I driven mine first, I would have gone home with another Coyote. The EcoBoost is an enjoyable ride. It is comfortable. It is smooth. It has great part throttle and mid-range torque. It is not fast, it does not sound particularly good and for a 4 banger, mileage is not stupendous. I average 24-25 mpg city/highway. I drive my car pretty hard though. I would imagine the car is more enjoyable with an MT-82. I bought the auto this time around.
