Reviving this thread for a close call I had today with an excavator that hit a bridge as I was passing it. My mustang is about as clean as my shorts right now.

I own an excavating contracting company and I have never seen an excavator loaded like that. The boom/stick were not folded in but rather in a parked position as if it were on a jobsite. Apperently that was the first time he had ever hauled an excavator and whomever loaded it must have been the first time also

I feel you, I hate when people don't get that the left lane is for passing not just a second lane. I have people all the time roll side by side with no clue you only go in the left lane to pass.

I think that's a retread casing there, but good reaction nonetheless.

Close call for sure.
Best thing is you are okay because it did not wreck you.
Second best thing is you got it all on video!

Glad you survived this. Now don't die from fire, flood, Covid, or fungus, or ... well, you get the irony.

Wow, that is scary! Great reaction.
Don't these truckers read the fucking signs before the overpasses? Don't they realize how tall their load is?
We had a dummie truck driver drive into a bridge here in MA and cause severe structural damage. Now it causes all sorts of traffic for people, (not me, I don't live near that area), and the trucking company now has to pay all expenses to repair that bridge. There are signs telling you what the bridge height is way before going under it.

Its hard to see in the video but the excavator actually hit the height sign. Found a better picture of it from AZ DOT's twitter feed. The bridge is bent now.

Doesn't look like too much damage luckily.
So, no signs before going under the bridge, only at the bridge?

I don't remember seeing any additional height signs and I rarely take this road so I am not too familiar with the signs there.

Fair enough.

Here in MA, we have signs way before going under the bridges and the dummies still try to go under. lol
Idiots. lol

The excavator could have easily been 2 to 2.5 ft lower but the dumbass that loaded it didnt fold up correctly. At the current height I'm sure he was supposed to have a pole escort.

If you watch the car in the far left lane tailgating, you'll see he's the one that cuts all the way across four lanes and doesn't make it to his exit without driving over the median.

Link is to the 0:26 timestamp when the action happens:
