This is the first car I’ve had an aftermarket intake on (was installed when I bought it) and I’m wondering what to do with the filter. I already bought the K&N cleaner spray, filter oil, cleaned it and then oiled it.

My question is, should I have done that? I couldn’t figure out what the filter is made of, but I was assuming it was the cotton filter that the stuff is made for so I went ahead and did it. If it’s a dry filter then I guess I shouldn’t have done it, but here we are. Added some pictures for reference and a link to the setup that I have.

FWIW, I have a dry filter from Ford Performance; their dry filters are stamped, "Do not oil." on the end cap.

I checked any JLT filter reference I could find, looking for one that looked like yours. None of them had "Do not oil" on them. All of them referenced the amount of oil to use on the surface in the product details.

Yeah, I didn’t see anything that said not to oil. It’s probably fine but I didn’t want to be that guy that shrugs it off and does something stupid.

Buy a new air filter, oil and mafs don't mix well and the cost of an air filter into your service plan must be near nothing compared to peace of mind.

Did you read the link you provided? Based on that link, it is an oiled filter. So yes, clean, dry, and oil. If you don’t oil, it will let fine dirt by.

Yeah, I was just thrown off since mine is black now and doesn’t look like it was ever red, but I suppose that just happens over time from getting dirty. I wasn’t sure if I had a different version or something. This is just me overthinking things lol.

Already cleaned/dried yesterday and oiled it up today so I should be all set.
Thanks for the replies!

Like I said, this is my first “CAI” so I hadn’t heard about this. Just looked it up out of further curiosity and it seems like a somewhat common occurrence so I may just go the dry filter route. Fortunately, I did not oil the inside of the filter so I think I’m safe for the time being.

Thanks!

Yes thats a cleanable oiled filter. But theres WAY TOO MUCH OIL on it. Clean it again and then just a light mist of oil on the filter media only. (Theres oil everywhere on that filter) Too much oil will cause problems coating your mass air flow sensor and throw a check engine light along with poor running.
