I'm not sure what else they would be if they don't fit the definition of muscle cars.
Pony. Pony cars. As in a mustang.

The Mustang literally defined and created the vehicle category.

Oh thank god we’re having this debate and not the usual automatic transmission vs manual transmission circle jerk Again.

There's no debate.

I have no objection to the pony car name, even though they are bloated and porky now.

Who cares if they sold more Challengers , doesn’t mean nothing. More Mustangs were sold than Corvettes and Camaro’s combined in 2020.

Pony car. Long nose, short deck, 'sporty styling', 2 door, 4 seater, under 111" wheelbase.

List of Pony cars:
  • AMC Javelin (1968–1974)
  • Chevrolet Camaro (1967–2002; 2010–present)
  • Dodge Challenger (1970–1974; 2008–present)
  • Ford Mustang (1965–present)
  • Mercury Capri (1979–1986)
  • Mercury Cougar (1967–1973)
  • Plymouth Barracuda (1964–1974)
  • Pontiac Firebird (1967–2002)

IMO Camaro and Mustang are plenty big and heavy enough to be called muscle cars. And they make enough HP. Compared to the original cars that were called muscle cars, they weigh more and make more power. I'm not sure what else they would be if they don't fit the definition of muscle cars.
PONY CARS! That's what they have always been segmented into. Smaller car, long hood and short deck two door

I leased a 2017 Challenger R/T at the same time we bought a Pacifica mini-van, really liked the car, but turned it in and bought a Mustang a month later. Enjoy both for different reasons.

That being said, Chrysler, Dodge, Stellantis will sell lease to anyone, including the high risk loan crowd. I live a mile from Flat Rock, and every vehicle related crime in Detroit involves a 300, Charger, Challenger or Journey. That may have something to do with sale/lease numbers.

As for the cars, I put 18,000 miles on the R/T in 2 years without any problem, outside of the navigation system thinking I was in Long Beach, CA.

However, our 2017 Pacifica with 50,000 miles is a POS in every regard. We've had the A/C fixed twice in the last 4 months for 'allegedly' separate issues. Cost would have been $2,000 if I didn't have the extended warranty, which is a MUST on every Chrysler purchase. Still had to pay a $100 deductible each time, on top of the cost of the 130,000 mile warranty.

So there is no way in hell I would trust a Challenger past the warranty, one of the reasons I didn't buy one of those. They sell/lease to anyone, and the quality is atrocious.
