So I have a’19 base EcoBoost - is it possible to add a OEM CD player? Is this a practical idea? DYI possible?

Curious why you want a CD player? If to play music, why not simply place the tracks on a USB drive, and plug that into the armrest USB drive (or the one on the dash)?

Ah, got it. You could get a laptop USB optical drive (to test the experience). Then, determine if you want to get that optical drive installed/mounted properly in the car.

Not necessarily this one, merely an example...

Only way to get a factory CD player in 2019 was with the B&O system. Best bet would probably be a portable unit plugged into the USB or using Bluetooth.

I inquired with my dealer, the parts manager called Ford and it is not an option at this time. He said check back later to see if it was available. I'm kinda liking that little drive linked earlier. I steam Spotify most of the time but the music isn't always the highest of quality. And as the op I have a lot of cd's I'd like to listen to.

Seriously, much quicker to simply export the tracks from a CD, to a USB drive. Most CD playing software in Windows, has an export feature. Alas, one might have to deal with DRM issues (another conversation).
Then, play the music from that USB drive...

PS: Via Google Music, there is also an option to add songs to your account that way. Years ago, I use to do this. These days, I simply subscribe to Sirius XM. Just can't be bothered...

Most streaming music is not of the highest quality, we can't compress music 90% and expect it to sound the same. We *can* rip a CD to a USB with WAV files which sound the same as a CD (since they are identical). I do this for my music but in a Mustang I am not sure the higher quality is really audible, even with active exhaust on "quiet". ;)

So something might be available in the future?

Sorry but I doubt the dealer knows what they are talking about. You would have to replace the center stack if you wanted the factory player. If you had Sync 3 with the 8” screen there is a stand alone CD player that would work with it. But with the base system it would hardly be worth the expense.

Here’s the one that would work if you had Sync 3.

Years and years ago I copied all my CDs, 300+, into a separate hard drive. Yes, it took a long time. Back then I'd transfer the stuff I wanted into whatever portable music player I was using at the time. Now days I've got that music on a memory card in my phone. In the Mustang I've got several way to get music. Sirius is my go to means. I can travel and not worry about constantly looking for stations and since it's live I still feel connected to the outside world. I also have a lot of music on an old Ipod that lives in the center console. Or I can bluetooth my phone to the radio and use the music on it or stream from any number of apps, including audio books from the library with the Overdrive app. Since my '18 EB Premium has a CD player I've even got that option though I've only used it like one time.

Like I said he called the powers that be and that is what he said. I stood at the counter and listened to the whole conversation so he might know what he's talking about!

Yup, didn’t read that quite right. He said it wasn’t an option. Ford dropped CD players in all Mustangs except for the B&O. It is considered old technology. Cannot see them bringing it back. OP also has the base 4” screen so he really has few options.

Look at this and put the files on a usb key/drive then put that into a usb input in the mustang and forget about it.
You'll also be able to put multiple albums on the same drive so you never have to change the CD.

I prefer flac files for lossless but in the mustang I don't mind a 320kbps mp3.
Alternatively you could put those file in your phone (maybe add a sd card) and use bluetooth or a usb connection to the phone.

Personally, I'm using tidal hifi (up to 24bit/96khz) with bluetooth in my car but I also use tidal a lot at home with my audiophile sound system.

Cd's, what's that?

Got rid of all my vinyl records in 1987 when cd's came out
Got rid of all my cd's around 2008 when digital become the rage
Got rid of all my mp3's recently and now flac exclusively

Get yourself a good media software tool like J.River media center
and rip those cd's to digital and throw them on a usb stick in the car.
