I have heard and read stories about how easily the CF wheels can get damaged under normal conditions. Therefive, I am considering picking up a set of forged ones and another set of Cup 2's to use instead. I realize this is counterproductive to buying one of the 2-seaters and I would love to show off the carbon...BUT, I sure don't want them to get all dinged up. I figure it wouldn't be too much trouble to swap them all out for a trip to the track or for Cars and Coffee with tires already mounted.

And, speaking of mounting, is it common or uncommon for tire dealers to have the equipment to deal with the special wheels?

But what I'm hoping is the case is that there are many of you who have experience with comparable wheels on 350's and I'm wondering what that experience has been like in terms of damage.

Thanks in advance,

I'm not getting a CFTP, but I know for a fact I'd be doing the same thing as you. Regardless of the damage potential, the cost to repair/replace would be too high for every day driving.

I follow your guys logic, but.......why have them if your not going to use them? When/if i get my GT500 the factory wheels(non CF) will be for sale as soon as i can get a set built. I know keeping them makes sense as far as value but I so far i haven't sold any of my cars and they just create clutter. You will just have to check around local to your area finding a place with the right equipment and then someone knowledgeable about how to use it is difficult in my town...

Trax: I plan to ask around while we have time to waste and I hear ya about using what you paid for. The demand for maintaining perfection can get carried away, however. We'll see. Maybe wait for the first nick and then switch 'em out. I don't know.

Way ahead of you..... I'll be getting another set of signature wheels for the 500. I have 2 sets for the 350Rs and am very impressed with the quality.

Oh, and as for carbon fiber wheel damage? Been there done that. I wrote an article on it here in the 350 section. A picture is worth a thousand words. These wheels are an issue waiting to happen. Have a look at the clearance.

No extra wheels for me. I don't drive my Shelby's very often so the risk of damage is much less. My 16 GT 350 only has 4,500 miles on it and I don't expect to put many miles on the GT 500. Manly a show car and occasional date night car.

My only experience with the Carbon Fiber wheels are, NO ONE in my area will touch them other than TireRack or dealer. I’d make sure who ever mounted or balanced, or even, I know you’re not supposed to, but repair them had adequate coverage in case they scratch one.

After the initial disappointment of not being able to get a CFTP, I’m almost glad I’m getting Base. My wife and kids will often drive my cars, I don’t want to have to inspect the wheels every time one goes out. Probably a smart move getting a second set of wheels

Thanks, Tom..I will do exactly that.
Yea I saw the site and prices, I'm not necessarily interested in rims as the base rims are good enough to get me down the road.

I was just curious.
