Running water/meth injection should help keep the intake valves and throttle body clean, plus lower charge temps.

Engines with variable cam timing no longer use EGR, the build up is primarily caused from oil coming through the PCV/breather system, I blame lack luster oil separators that are installed from the factory.

Every intake I pull on a newer engine, I'm disappointed with how much oil their is inside. I've seen an NA V6 that oil had travelled up the breather and dripped down and almost completely soaked the air filter.

Catch cans with sufficient baffling should help prevent the build up,
proper water/meth injection should clean it.

Walnut blasting works for cleaning, not cheap though.
^This. The N54 guys have had pretty good experiences with it, and while not the cheapest option, if you are only doing it every 25k or so, it shouldn't be a huge burden. I'm lucky enough to have someone local who can do it for cheap.
