Your statement is on point. I don’t think the average owner is going to look any further past the oil level on the dipstick.
Compression / Leak Down test is where it’s at.

Best thing to do is consult your owners manual for recommendations for your vehicle. Stay inside that, and you should, almost never, have a warranty problem.
