Has anyone had an issue with either a boundary crank sprocket or even an oem crank sprocket that keeps sliding forward after 30 seconds of running after reinstall causing the chain to run on the guide causing a noise? I’ve torn this car apart 2 times and now I need to do it a 3rd time and want to get it right this time…idk if it’s a tensioner problem, chain problem, guide problem, or a harmonic balancer issue in totally stumped if anyone can help or has come across this please share how you fixed it!

Like I mentioned in your other post-

Are you using the same OEM bolt? If so, that could be your issue. The bolt stretches out, so you may not be getting the correct clamping force on the harmonic balancer. What are you using to install the balancer?

No I originally had a new bolt as I’m torquing it down the the ftib starts to decrease so I stop bc I don’t want to strip the crank unless that’s normal? And I use an installer tool…does the bolt stop turning when the balancer bottoms out? Should I use an impact

you can only use a NEW bolt one time. That’s it.

IF….you use it a 2nd time it is already stretched from the first time you torqued it , and will only stretch more and more and not get to the torque value it needs to be And it will fail Or snap.

The balancer is tight and uses a lot of torque to get it seated properly , your bolt is twisting and not applying enough force to seat properly.

your comment about the torque getting less is the bolt twisting/stretching and not getting tighter if that makes sense.

are you using a torque wrench to do up the bolt ?? And fords install recommend instructions ?

check last page of PDF For proper install.

or is it normal that when I’m installing the harmonic balancer I get up to about 80 foot pounds then it becomes easy and stays around the 70s when that happened usually, I back off I don’t wanna strip the crank unless it’s supposed to do that and I’m just pushing the balancer in further

I do have another bolt that’s new that I can use do you think it’s normal that my torque starts to get lower as I’m torquing it down do you think it’s pushing the balancer on farther even tho my tool didn’t let me go anymore? If that’s the case then I’ll keep cranking on that bolt until I get to the set torque I need I’m just scared of snapping the bolt and stripping the crank out

The crank sprocket cant move forward, the balancer pushes the sprocket into the crank and the balancer bolt provides the clamping force to keep the sprocket from slipping on the crank. The keyway is mainly for locating the crank sprocket for timing.

That’s the thing when I remove my timing cover I find that sprocket isn’t flush against the oil pump anymore that why I’m wondering if the balancer isn’t going as far back as it should be even the tool feels like it when I go to torque it down I get to about 80ftib then the the torque goes to the 70s so I stop I’m wondering if I should keep going and see if it’s pushing the balancer or so I stop I don’t want to strip the crank

yes a little maybe. As you torque the bolt up the pulley with slide inwards with it and the number might move around a little. But once the pulley pushes up against the crank sprocket and bottoms Out. That’s when the correct value of torque should be seen.

“torque to yield“ bolts can feel tricky to someone who has never done them before , as they feel weird. They do not tighten like a normal bolt. And then you tighten them to a setting and then go to 45 or 90 deg etc. To me it’s always an OH fuck type of feeling.

head bolts are way worse. The are scary at times.

Again. What tool are you using To do up the bolt ??? post a picture.

This is the type of job that need an accurate tool.

Maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong the numbers start to get wierd (I’m tightening and the bolt torque is going down) maybe it’s really me pushing the balancer farther in

Should I try to impact it in or do I stick to the torque wrench…I have this bolt set aside for when I procharge the car but I’ll give this a bolt a try since it’s never been used before

You must not be seating the balancer completely if the torque is fluctuating. Seat the balancer completely and torque the bolt. Done deal.
I use that tool and go until it doesn’t budge anymore so I just assumed it’s on all the way…like I said I’m just worried I’m going to strip the crank shaft

That tool is only to help put the pulley On.

what torque wrench are you using to get the correct value ?
