I wouldn't think you'd get more heat surrounding the shifter from that install. Go back underneath and see if you dislodged the shifter's lower boot that fastens to the trans tunnel. Maybe you dislodged it while installing the upper part of the support bracket. My 17's boot fastening lip was only half seated from the factory and I thought there was an inherent heat problem, until I noticed it while under the car one day. Re-seating it made a huge difference.
