I was hoping to do a not so expensive upgrade to the speakers, and simply add a subwoofer. I was hoping the base unit could support it.
Are you asking how to do an install like this or what amp and sub combo you should get?

The base system will work fine. Just take the amp signal from the rear passenger speaker and keep the speaker time alignment on in the stereo and leave bass eq at 0.

I can power a subwoofer that way?

I never knew a subwoofer could run by itself in the back. I don't necessarily care about new speakers. Subwoofer would make a big difference.

I did that with the Rockford Fosgate 10 inch self powered sub. It sounds great. Sub was about $165. Once you add the sub, the crappy stock speakers don't sound so crappy.

Sub also has a nice small footprint in the trunk. It does not take up a lot of space.

I plan on going this route. Self powered seems a bit better (and easier).

Just to make sure this is clear, the sub he's talking about has a built in amp. You will need to run a power wire from the battery to the trunk. You'll get the signal from the rear speakers. Most of these subs have the ability to turn themselves on by sensing the signal, so you won't need a remote turn on lead.

I did something similar. Rockford power components up front powered by punch 400 and a single 1 soundquebed 10" powered by punch 1000.
pretty sure i have the same amp as you laying around my garage from one of my previous cars that i have been wanting to add in to my system and then replace the speakers. i have the base system ive just been having a difficult time finding info about how/where to put the amp and then where it would need to be in the circuit to power the speakers? would you have any input on this?
