They have to be purchased and they come on an SD card that has to reside in the SD card slot for nav to work.
Any idea how much a map update would cost for the 2015 Sync 2?

2016 A7 SD map card

The Sync2 2016 SD update is called the A7 and costs $149.99 for the US+Canada, and $159.99 for the US+Mexico.

I have an aftermarket 8 inch GPS in my truck with voice command and BlueTooth. It cost me $169. It comes with lifetime FREE updates (usually updated 3 times a year), also includes live Traffic updates.

Can you say OEM ripoff?!

You can usually get them for well under $100 from eBay, there is an A7 for $70 currently.

Personally I have never seen the need to update maps. I have an 8 year old TomTom I use on travel. Never had an issue getting to where I need to go anywhere I have driven in the US. Even Google Maps is not immediate, it may take a year or more for a new road to show up.

Eventually, Ford will release the update for Sync 3 that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and when they do, you won't have to wait for Ford to update the maps, nor will you need to pay, as you can just use Google Maps, which is CONSTANTLY updated, and best of all, FREE!

Now, when Ford is going to release the update for 2016 vehicles, I don't know...

So I wanted to update my Sync2 w/MyFordTouch. Found out its 150 a year. Looks like convincing my better half to let me get the a Tesla style 10.4 vertical tablet will be a lot easier now!

HERE was a subsidiary of Nokia then was bought out by Garmin. The problem has always been that HERE maps were always more than a year out of date at the time of release.
You don't need annual updates if you live an area that does not have much development.
I presently live in NW Florida...the streets literally change from month to month.
My 2016 SD chip constantly tries to guide me through brand new gated communities.

Anyone have any idea when ford will release the next map update, is there a schedule? The latest I see is A7 which was available for the 2016. A6 was in my 2015. It seems this close to 2018, we should have already seen an update for the 17 or soon the 18?

Will it be a free update or a heavily paid one?
