Most of the automotive sactioning bodies want a snell rated helmet. Maybe becaue they have a built in expiration date. For racing, you need a SA rated helmet, which are fire resistant. No one gets trapped inside a burning motorcycle.

For a autocross, no one is likely to check, so you can likely get buy with a DOT or even unrated helmet (well, they may check if you have one of those silly no protection half helmets). For a track day, they may check. For a race they will definately check.

The Bell K1 is what I run, it's multipurpose so I use it for Karting and Cars. They are whored out on the internet pretty cheap, I have a huge melon and it's still really light and comfortable. I wear glasses with the shield no issues, very comfortable and offers good sound transmission (you can hear). Plus it's Hans Post ready.

Second this. Pyrotect's equivalent of this is good too, and you may be able to find it cheaper. Should be just as light and comfortable for the size:

Much will depend on the groups you run with. If you know ahead of time, you can buy to their requirements. If you don't know, then get an SA Snell rated one. Most of the clubs I have seen allow a 10 or 15 year window on the Snell rating.

I have used HJC helmets. My current one is the AR-10
