I have auto wipers but my solution is that I never drive in the rain. :D

I have the auto wipers and think they work great. Much better than my old BMW auto wipers. The BMW required you to always initiate the first wipe after you start the car, then they would start, stop, adjust automatically. The Mustang wipers just wipe when it starts to rain - no intervention needed. So far, I haven't had any errors. I drove a Lexus recently with auto wipers, and they kept wiping everytime an insect hit the windshield on the highway. Very annoying, and made a mess of the windshield.

I've yet to find a setting that works well. They're either going full blast for a tiny droplet or letting rain build up too much. They're much better than the auto wipers on my long gone 2000 Lincoln LS, but not as good as those on my friend's Mazda 6. At least Ford gave us the option to disable auto wipers and just go back to normal intermittent.

On a slight tangent, it still bothers me that moving the stalk up turns on the wipers. I much prefer down, but oh well.

Yeah, the stalk is very touchy in my opinion, I was changing out the infotainment system in the center console and bumped the stalk a number of times and then when I would turn on accessory mode to test my work the darn wipers were going, kinda annoying for sure.

These auto wipers were only an option on 401 package I believe. (memory seats, adaptive cruise control, BLIS)

The packages are kind of strange. I really wish memory seats were on all premiums.

They were not part of the 401 package
they were in a package with the ACC only, which is a bit strange

At times when it does rain out here in SoCal I too have experienced some of the probes that the OP described. Doesn't bother me as much because we just don't get rain like other parts of the country.
Rant on: I have the @!$/ ACC and I didn't order it but the salesman FUBAR'd my order. Passengers get a kick out of it when it's triggered but my issue with it is I wanna change my grill but I have to leave the bottom grill that covers the ACC in tact. Seems as though it throws a code when you change the plastic covering out. I think it looks wierd to have an aftermarket honeycomb style grill up top but still have the factory grill at the bottom - oh well things could be worse. Rant off:

I figured it out in a thunderstorm. You leave the wipers on in the intermitant setting, not in the off setting

It's not just in the Mustang that they act odd. Our 2013 Taurus is inconsistent also. Funny cuz I have a 2009 Caddy CTS that they work perfectly, very consistent. I rarely ever have to change the sensitivity. They always seem to come on at the right time and stay on for the right amount of rain.

I imagine that the software accepts whatever "blemishes" there are in the camera view when the car starts-up as "permanent" (eg dried bugs that aren't going to shift easily) - otherwise it runs the risk of the wipers running continuously trying to clear something that isn't going to clear. This would explain them not coming on automatically when you start the car with a wet windshield. One manual wipe then seems to let the software know what the view should be like, and it's off and running from then on.
