I've never had a car with these. Are they hard to use. Can I fuck shit up if I shift wrong?

Very easy to use. The click with a light touch. Anyone can operate them, not just gym rats.

You can't make it do anything that'll hurt the car. If going to fast, it won't let you downshift too far.

It's active in all modes but that isn't a protection thing.

Regarding the automatic transmission, can you also manually down/upshift with the shifter handle in the center console as well? Or are the Shift Paddles on the steering wheel your only option.

The paddles or letting the car shift itself are your only options.

Paddles are just a form of electronic input to override or dictate the car's shift points. You can't shift in too low or high of a gear if the ECU determines that it would put the car in an unsafe operating range.
