Hi Guys, I am seeking some advice & guidance.

My Race Red GT arrived at my Sydney dealer on Friday afternoon 24 June, with an planned delivery to me this coming Wednesday, 29 June.

Having established a good relationship with my dealer, I went to have a look at my car today (Sunday) cause I just couldn't help myself :D.

My Stang was sitting in their holding yard out the back and I had the opportunity to have a really good look over her. In the process I was horrified to find a large paint chip / gouge on the pax door, right on the upper crease line about 6 inches aft of the mirror. In large, I am saying about a 5mm square chip which has exposed the base metal panel.

Gutted, absolutely gutted :(.

The sales dude at the dealership advised me that damage of this type (and more) has happened on many of the mustangs they have received for delivery and that I should not be concerned as they will have it repaired and the door fully painted (at Ford AUS expense). I do believe the damaged happened prior to receipt at my dealer.

At this time, I am not very comfortable in having a large paint repair carried out on my new Stang. I had hoped that my new Stang would be perfect.

I am seeking some guidance, advice and experience on this type of situation as I have never faced this before.

Have many new Stang owners seen or experienced this type of damage?
Does this typically get caught & repaired prior to a new owner being even aware?
What are my rights with purchasing a new car?
What repair guarantees can I expect (or demand)?

Any other thoughts or experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
James

Have many new Stang owners seen or experienced this type of damage? Not a count of people, but some have had chips or scratches.
Does this typically get caught & repaired prior to a new owner being even aware? Depends on what state they are offloaded in. In Melbourne they all go through Ford at Altona for a look over. Not sure about Syd
What are my rights with purchasing a new car? You accept the car as it is or you don't and wait for a new order. You have no legal rights to this car as it legally isn't yours until signed over.
What repair guarantees can I expect (or demand)? Expect, a new car that has been delivered from overseas and some damage may occur during transit, that Ford repairs prior to delivery. It wont be factory paint quality, but normal warrantty will apply.

A kick in the head sure but things will work out. I haven't experienced this type of damage but have heard paint issues are common amongst this breed of imported Fords. I guess if you didn't go to view it they would have repaired it without you knowing therefore delaying your delivery date.

I say take delivery of your vehicle ONLY after it has been repaired, but I would be finalising the payment because the dealership has every right to sell it under your nose to another customer if you refuse to finalise the contract. The dealership will categorically ensure that your beast will be repaired so don't worry. Work with the repairer to ensure that there will be a 'lifetime warranty' on the workmanship. This MUST be guaranteed by the body shop undertaking the repairs. You dealership wouldn't use a backyarder for this repair.

If I were you I would source the repairer, if you know one, or source a touch up expert, with the dealership footing the bill. The touch up work should take several days to meticulously and painstakingly fill the 'hole' and finally wetsanding & buffing the affected area. It will be good as new!

I would go down the touch up path and have them do the work at the dealership. This path there will be no need to strip the trim and the risk of incorrect colour matching.

I'm thinking it's pretty common.
Sally has a few abrasion marks in various locations (they'll buff out) and a tiny outward dent in the passenger door, down low where you have to know exactly where to look, at the right angle, in the right lighting..
No car is ever gonna be perfect, it's partially worse in the case of the Aussie Mustang cos the damn things are 3 months old before we see them. Who know what goes on in that interim period??
Take the car.
Get it repaired to YOUR satisfaction.
She's a MUSTANG! Be proud. Own the shit out of her and all of her little foibles and blemishes.

shit man, if you are paying over 60k for a car, It better be perfect for you. DO NOT ACCEPT it until it is fixed to your standards.

When you build a house its the same, you don't take the keys unless they have fixed everything to the best standard possible.

You have signed a contract to buy a new vehicle (without damage) they are breaking the contract if they do not present the car in brand new condition.

Thanks for the responses Guys, much appreciated.

I will attempt to talk with the Delivery Manager today to discuss repair options and time frames.

My car also arrived with paint defects but no scratches; the salesman called me up to tell me about it and that delivery would be delayed. He also mentioned possible respraying of boot, roof and bonnet.

As I was having Ceramic Pro paint treatment done after delivery I suggested the detailer I was going to use could take a look and see what could be done.

Detailer gave dealers pre-delivery guys some advice and they transformed the car. Detailer then took the finish to another level after delivery.

Best to avoid respraying if possible and if you are considering paint treatment then it might pay to have a detailer check out the car.

Don't worry even two Audi's I have purchased brand new came with some imperfections. It's inevitable but dealer will pay for any repairs especially if you highlight these before final review and acceptance by buyer. So go over it. (Outside or in really good lighting) especially down low where most are scratched and dented.

Totally agree - dealer will fix it at their cost and warranty covered by them. Nothing is ever perfect but especially bearing in mind how long these beauties are sitting at Baltimore waiting for their ship ticket. It will be fixed and you will soon forget about it and just be loving having the car at long last.

This actually happens a lot more than most people would realize unfortunately, majority of the time it is fixed before the customer ever finds out though.

Again, thanks for all the responses & insight.

Very impressed with the dealership. By the time I had called the Delivery Manager at 10am this morning the delivery team had already sent photos off to Ford HQ for damage assessment & repair approval, so ball is rolling. Maybe a 1.5 week delay.

Take delivery and run it in before the apprentices at the panel shop do?

Mines gotta go back for a number of fixes, photos in the defect thread but none of which have bothered me enough to not enjoy it the last 1000km's.
