Hello guys,

As you know, I will be selling the Ecoboost soon and believe it or not, I have never actually sold one of my cars. First 2 were scrapped (cheap run arounds), the third I sold to my sister so that doesn't really count, and the fourth I still have (Fiesta).

Anyway, not only is it new to me but it's not your typical car sale so hoping some of you guys have some words of wisdom :)

The very rough plan in my head is to start with adverts on the forum(s) and I also had the idea of adding "for sale" window stickers to the car - something simple with a price & email address. I figured this would be a good advert as I drive it around a lot, and I'm not in any rush to sell it.

I guess I am looking for do's and dont's here.

Obviously I want to avoid any time wasters. Assuming as well that I wont be obliged to offer test drives?

Has anyone ever sold a car with remaining finance on it? Not sure how best to tackle that either.

Cheers in advance

I'd avoid the window sticker; maybe it'll work for you, but the car draws enough attention without sticky fingers on it because someone couldn't read the thing for 10ft away. Your call though.

Forum-wise, sure - also if you're a Piston Heads member, it's free to advertise on there.

Consider eBay/Autotrader if you strike out on the above; both are costly though.

Thanks. Yea, I want to avoid ebay/auto trader if I can. PH is a good shout.

Window sticker I'm not 100% doing, depending on the feedback I get here! But good point, don't want the riff raff too close now.

Window posters tend to work on road-side sales for £500/£1000 cars, I find. Maybe just me, but someone wanting one is probably going to be scouring ads in the local area, over a drive-by.

Try the other Mustang forums too; UK and club sites and maybe Facebook/Social media.

Ebay, autotrader, Pistonheads, MOCGB, Gumtree.

When people turn up, expect them to try and run a bargain on you. I'v eonly ever sold my Corsa before, listed for 5250 with new discs/pads and new lights all over, MOT'd the week before, first person came back tried to low ball at 4500, sold it to them for 5k. They returned twice in the same day to look at the car (3 times in one day).

Obviosuly, your car isn't a Cat C/D so you're good on that front, make sure you have service logs when selling, and any mods you're selling it with to be listed. And if the mods were fitted by a pro, have them listed as well.

Make sure you have a price set as the minimum you'd sell it for, for those who are going to barter.

Other than that, list it in as many places as you can, I got some interest in mine on instagram (hashtags help) and Facebook, but a few timer wasters too, so be prepared for them!

Oh and try the local newspaper, I hear the old men still read that as that's your potential audience ;)!

Knew that was coming

Any input on price appreciated as well. I have £29.5k in mind at the moment. Ambitious I know but I'm prepared to lower if I have to. Got to bear in mind I will be leaving the mods on; spacers, springs, grilles. Also, it's the best colour so worth a bit more anyway...

Be prepared to have your time wasted.
Pictures pictures pictures. Get loads of them of everything. Ever little mark that someone as eagle eyed as you will pick up. Just be honest and it will help you out. And take time over the advert wording and layout. I have probably passed by really good cars due to a advert that is unreadable.

The only places I ever advertise is PH, eBay, auto trader and forums.
Doesn't seem to be that many members on here looking to buy right now but there may be some lurkers. I guess you can sell today and still have other modes of transport? Get it advertised asap, I sold my car in February 2016 and didn't pick my mustang up until July. It sucked but I got good money by doing that.

Oh also, if you want, I can put it up for sale in FB groups, quite a few in groups who just do not bother with waiting and expect it now... I did mention you were looking at selling to someone on MFUK today.

Do you not fancy having the mods removed? I know it's a pain but most buyers want a stock car. The grills will probably be fine as most people won't notice, but springs and spacers I would consider removing. Plus you can sell them on here pretty easily I bet

Yep. Keeping the Fiesta. The advantage being that if I sell now, I can easily save enough for an exhaust by the time the GT arrives :D

Re mods - I will leave as is. I can't really do it myself and whatever I pay someone to de install will take a big chunk out of what I can sell the parts for - that's my thinking anyway. Will leave all the original parts with the buyer so they can put it back to stock if they wish.

and Manders - I will no doubt take you up on the FB offer when the time comes.

Yeah let me know, if you still have stock grilles (or even if you don't, as I have a spare set) I can swap them over for you, tints I'd leave on, shift knob I'd swap, and your spacers and nuts I'd take off, but, you'd have to come up here for that ;)!. But offers there if you want ot save a bit of cash.

I'm assuming your dealer you've ordered your proper Mustang from (albeit in the wrong colour) knows that you will be selling the EB. Word of mouth still sells; if someone walks in wanting your spec car he might pass them to you, or offer to buy yours in at a better rate than otherwise.

Yep he does. Good point - I will ping him an email to let him know! Already offered £25k part exchange value but I know it's worth more than that.

This gives me an excuse to ask if there is any movement on the order too :D

Right, dealer is a knut,

This is straight from Parkers, I even joined for 6 months free for ya  This is for a 65 plate 2.3 EB Fastback.

Selling

Franchised dealer - £29,200
Ind Dealer - £28,635
Private good cond - £28,635
Private poor cond - £25,590
Part Exchange - £26,670
Original price - £32,240 (I'm assuming you got it cheaper)

So that was me, an aged technologically challenged idiot, spending two minutes on the interweb for a true guide.

Take the mods off, I know it will possibly cost a few quid, but mods scream, to some, RAGGED! You'll sell them on no probs but probably use the Spacers on the new one, but probably not the springs.

My last car, I traded in, took all the mods off and sold them separately, I ended up with MORE than I was asking for privately, a considerable amount even taking into account the cost of mod removal.

Aim the price to sell, don't get caught up emotionally, the car may be worth what your asking to you, but it certainly won't be worth that to a buyer. Potential buyers will do their research and come in with less than you want, it's up to where your minerals sit, whether you hold out or not, but one things for sure, time will go fast toward the new one arriving.

Good luck mate, I hope you get everything you want for it, but once you sit in your V8 (yeah agree, wrong colour ), you won't give a f#ck ;)

Thanks George, good point on the mods actually. if I was buying second hand, I know I would want something stock!

Be well happy with that "private good cond" price to be fair. And yes, paid way less for it - £29,590 to be exact!
