Whipple assured me that the normal or borderline knock logic that maximizes timing for power is in the 2 degree range. Beyond 2 is when and power is reduced significantly.
I think this is thinking from 11-14 ECUs that should not apply to the 15+ ECUs. Stock the retard rate was 1* per knock event below 3000. Above 4000 it would be 1.5* per knock event. Saying up to 2* positive knock allowed it one last chance before the transition from Knock advance mode to Knock retard mode.

I commented on Alex's video to see what he says about it but no reply.

Again ford added an intensity axis to the table that replaced this knock retard rate table being based just on RPM. Now you don't want more than 0 knock, this will keep the system with in .5 of true borderline for the fuel you are running.

Adding a picture from HPT for a visual of what I am saying.

Sorry for the crappy video quality when I down loaded it it degraded a lot. Knocker is bottom right and when the digits turn yellow it's in positive knock. Boost was 11 psi timing advance around 18 ish and positive knock 1.65. Funny thing was in some runs it would have 0 knock in third gear, most knock was in 4th.
Thanks, I'll check the video out later when I get back to a PC. That 4.74 from the pic is yellow, so that's positive right?
Side note, most anyone who spoke up when a bunch of us got our Procharges (with Procharger tune) were all seeing positive 4 knock on our WOT. I think it's inherent to the compression/boost relationship, It was just too odd and convenient for it to be all of us with bad gas at the same time all different locations over the country.

Interesting...so you think Whipple has it wrong and is referring to 11-14 knock logic?

By the was love Hawaii. Was stationed at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps air Station from 86-91.

Well on my 93 I see 1.5-2 positive knock with the 3.625" pulley. I no longer have the 3.75" to test out.
If you're interested I can send it back to you for testing and you can send it back whenever you're done. Will have to wait about a week until I take it off and throw the 3.625 on.

You guys running 91 should buy the 5 gallon pail of Torco from VMP. Comes out to about $13 bucks a 32oz can with a forum discount.

That would be my guess. They may have found 2* at wot at the top of the rpm produces best power on the dyno from the 11-14s and may not even realize Ford added an intensity level in the 15+ ecu and this idea no longer applies. Unless their tunes flash a 11-14 strategy on to the 15+ cars they are selling their kits to which would be unlikely.

It's true the higher compression makes it hard to run more boost with pump gas. And it seems like a lot of people now are are seeing knock with pulley combos that should be knock free. However I have seen last year with my 3.75" pulley 9.5-10 psi on 93 -2 on the knocker and 21 spark advance.

Here is the snap shot.

No Mark, I'm sure Whipple is 100% aware and on top of the S550 calibration difference. They were on of the first to have a calibration for the new gen and their calibration guy is the same guy writes the calls for Ford. There flight control software is top notch and very similar to Ford Performance. I also know they work closely with the calibrator and know a lot about the software. But hey anything is possible I guess.

Their software is excellent. I've heard this before. Do you know their calibrators name? There were many people working on different parts of a single calibration not just a single person.

Well I did see Sam Guidos name on one of my calibration in the past, but when I asked Dustin Whipple if Sam was writing all their calibrations he said no. what is your background Mark you seem very knowledgeable.

I know of Sam Guido through ProMEFI. CHris Richards of ProM told me Sam had written the software and developed the PROM EFI standalone PCM and it was marketed through ProM. Apparently Sam also wrote the calibration for the Cobra Jet project.

Damn, could it be winter gas? I've been waiting and waiting to see if the pumps here transition to something different.

Up North the gas station start getting summer fuel in March so I would think the tanks should be all clear of winter blends by now.

I actually have a bit of information this when I had a chance to connect with Brian very briefly this week.

He's working on a formulation that he's sending to Whipple directly for testing. I'm not sure if this is a different form of IV or a combination of IV and IV-P but I know he's working directly with that team.

I hope to be in touch with him today and will provide some more information as soon as I have it.
