This might be a dumb question but is there anyway to test 93 fuel? I live in New Mexico with high elevation. So most gas stations only carry 91 octane rated fuel. Well today I managed to find a station that has 93 premium fuel. I have the car tuned for 91 and filled up the tank with the 93 octane. I did not switch the tune over yet as I wanna make sure to completely rid the gas tank of the remaining 91 fuel first (to avoid knocking from the higher 93 tune). I know there are E-85 test kits and some gas stations do carry E-85 by me but I am waiting to go Forced induction before I fork over the cash for another tune.

I have no clue as to it's accuracy. I found one brand Oktis-2, which has a price range of $140-$351, depending on retailer. The others were in the thousands.

Update: According to a Youtube video of the tester mentioned above. If the fuel has ethanol in it, the reading is inaccurate. That statement was in the comments.

O shoot, at that point it might just be better to wait and tune for E-85 instead of paying $140.00 just to measure the accuracy. E-85 test kits can be found for like $15-$35 bucks. Thanks for the help though!

If they actually created an affordable knock resistance/octane analyzer device the public could use, people would find some pretty garbage fuels often, and it would create quite the shit show.

It's my understanding that at altitude you don't need the extra octane. So 91 at elevation is the same as 93 at sea level.

I would load the 93 tune and log looking for positive knock. I suspect there will be none even on the 91 fuel.

Thank you, this is what I will do this weekend. I did not know that!

The official fuel quality tester that has been saving engines for years: KR. Monitor engine knock after every fill up, and do a WOT test after the fuel is thoroughly mixed and hasn't indicated positive knock.

There is less available Oxygen in the atmosphere at high elevation. The extra octane would help if you are FI and increase the boost, but when you go down in elevation there will be a problem.
