From what I have seen they are only offered in matte or gloss. I think AirDesigns calls it satin and Ford calls it matte.

Has anyone considered drilling out some of the holes in the two front non-functional vents? Considering getting these but im a bit concerned about cooling.

I’ve considered it but have not done it. The cooling is the same compared to stock. I’ve seen no difference.

I'm considering drilling out some of the holes for cosmetic reasons as well, as I'd think it'd look more "functional" if the holes were real, whether or not it actually helps.

I’m mostly afraid it’s going to look like crap if I do.

Just for those who wonder of the MMD vent option, here is a frontal shot

IMO, I don't think drilling would make much of a difference and would be very difficult to make it look good. I have seen blanked off areas of grills ground off from the back side which can leave a nice open mesh if enough time is spent doing it right. On these it seems like you would need to mod them off the car, disassembled. Otherwise you would probably end up with a bunch of white stress marks around each little drilled hole, which would then need to be painted. And it would be hard to make that many holes centered in each mesh opening leaving you with uneven looking holes. Remember, these cars are tested sitting at idle in desert temperatures. They could have made the hood opening larger from the factory and chose no to. Unless you are having temp problems, or have major engine mods (super or turbo) I wouldn't be too worried about the difference in air flow.

Thinking about it more, if I were looking to ensure better airflow: BEFORE installation I would grind down the inner edges of the vents on the bottom side of the part. You only have the material thickness to work with though and you risk screwing up the part.

This is actually the way I was thinking to go about it, if I were to decide to.

Would gloss black Air Designs look good on mine or would it be too much with the stripes?

Honestly, it depends... The other guy on here with a red mustang looked killer with matte black vents. Some colors look good with matte, some good with gloss. With the stripes, I think matte would look out of place. I tried the matte vents on my twister orange, but didn't like them. I went with a set of shadow black OEM take off hood vents instead.

Yeah I wouldn’t do matte since everything else on my car is gloss black. But I just didn’t know if making the vents black next to black stripes would be too much black on the hood.

Personally I think it would look really good but everyone has different tastes.

Objectively if you think this looks good you will likely enjoy it on the car.

Honestly i had the same dilemma when ordering. I ordered the gloss like a year and half ago twice when they came out initially and both sets that I ordered had lot of QC issues; the gloss looked cheap and there were lot of scratches... this time i wanted to try something different, so took a chance and ordered the matte. I couldn't be happier, they turned out awesome (see post #295 in this thread for pics)
