Hey all,

I recently had my valve body replaced due to my car having issue a going from reverse to drive. It would hitch, almost a second if it wasn’t catching onto the gears. That issue has been fixed when they replaced the valve body but now, with about 100 (maybe even more) miles driven since the repair, the car kind of jerks when I come to a stop. It’s not a violent jerk but it’s there. Is this normal behavior?

Another thing, after getting my valve body replaced, I took it in to a different dealership bc it was making a weird metallic rattle noise. Turns out the original dealer who did the work didn’t screw things in as tight as they should have. The original dealer is my “default” dealer because it’s closest to me...if I take it in for the jerking issue, should I avoid the original dealer at all costs? Or should I talk with the manager and explain what happened so that they can just be extra cautious when diagnosing and repairing (if needed) my car for the most recent jerking issue?

This transmission is far from being a smooth operator. The harder you brake, the jerkier the downshifts. I try to rationalize it by remembering how many gears it has to work its way through to get back to 1, but IMO, it could do it a lot more smoothly.

I got the dreaded orange wrench light a few months ago, and they originally thought it was a bad valve body, but ended up just doing a software flash on it. It didn't cure everything, but it no longer slams into gear from park, and no more wrench lights.

I would say that if you're getting a lot of bad behavior, it'll eventually set a code, at which time they'll have to re-visit it. But as for the occasional jerk or general indecisiveness, that's inherent to the A10. I've got two of them. They both lack in the "smooth" department, but strangely, the coupe is worse than the convertible. Most irritating is the long delay between reverse and drive. Some days I long for the A6 in my previous V6.

Yup. The reason I had to get my valve body replaced was because of the delay between reverse and drive! But now the jerkiness is concerning me as well.

Mine will occasionally - like a couple of times a week at least - have a significant delay between reverse and drive. This is always when I back out of the driveway cold in the morning and start to drive forward. The delay is maybe a second or two, with sometimes a jerk going in to drive. I'm sure, or at least I suspect that the jerk would be bigger if I gave it more gas, but I kind of recognize that the slip is going on and let it do it's thing at idle most of the time.

Is that what you were experiencing as well, or are these symptoms different?

Thanks!

My delay is at its worst after the car and transmission are fully warmed up. 20 mile drive home from work, stop at Target, come back out 10 minutes later, start up, wait for it to drop to idle, and put it in Drive. It seems like an eternity before it engages. I don't know if they purposely programmed it to do this (Like the 80's and 90's Lincoln Town Cars), or if it's just inherent to the design, but I get tired of waiting for it.

No, the A10 delay you and others are experiencing is NOT normal.

Take it to the Dealer and have the car checked out. I have a specific 10R80 thread on here that contains all of the S550 10R80 specific TSB and SSM Ford docs pertaining to known issues.

Some folks (and based on warranty repair) have also found that their 10R80 was low on fluid and was not filled to the proper capacity from the factory. Simple fix, fill to capacity with CORRECT fluid, as a TSB exists about that too (it’s a specific fluid for 10R80).

Some have had the 10R80 software updated which has remedied the shifting response issues as well as the shifting harshness during driving.

In worst cases:
1) there is an issue with some 10R80’s regarding the 2nd gear clutch cluster
2) there have been some 10R80’s with valve body issues
3) low fluid caused other internal damages and based on Ford recommendation, the trans gets replaced

Schedule an appointment - if at all possible, tell your Service Writer you want to take the Tech on a test drive to demo the issues.

They had my car for 3 days. They confirmed that they checked the fluid level, and color. They originally thought it was a valve body issue, but concluded it needed a software flash. My convertible behaves the same way with regard to the delay, which has led me to believe it's inherent. But....if there's anyone in Dallas that doesn't have the P-D delay that wants to take me for a ride in their A10 EB, I'd be much obliged. As of right now, it's normal (but frustrating) behavior according to my experiences to date.
