Greetings from sunny hot Florida.

Just came from the Thomasville Ford dealer in Ga to have a left side creaking/groan type noise checked out.
It happens when the car accelerates or decelerates slowly and on left turns.
I was told it was a Body Strut on the left side and they had to order the part.
Time for repair would be 3 hours in the waiting room.

I asked the service manager what and where it was and his response was "It's on the body under the car".
He walked off ..... REALLY, Think it's time to find another dealer.
Anyway I checked my Helms Ford Manual when I got home and can't seem to locate a "Body Strut" anywhere in it.

Anybody know of this part, where exactly, photo maybe?

Thanks and .....

It's impossible to know. He might have meant a front strut, which would be my guess.

Obviously the person you spoke to doesn't know much about cars.......or there's a part to these Mustangs I have never heard of before now.

You should get paper-work with part numbers that explain what was changed/repaired, then you'll have your answer.

Waiting for the part to come in as we speak.

Just uploaded a short 10 second video to Youtube. Rocked the car so you can hear the noise.

Kinda a strange name ... never heard of it called this. There are two macpherson struts on the front of the vehicle which support the car via a spring-on-shock type of design. The rear end has two shock absorbers but they are not load bearing. They attach to the body.... but really never heard of them called body struts.

Maybe the guy is used to working on big trucks that have a strut attaching the body to the chassis to alleviate NVH.

I could be the strut. I had one that made some strange "creaking" "popping" noises, on a new Ford a few years back. It had a similar sound as yours. It was replaced under warranty. I can't remember how long it took though.

When they have me come in for the repair I'll get a photo and post it.
I have absolutely no Idea how long it will be before the part comes in.

Thanks to all for your input, I'll keep you posted.

That sounds like it could be any number of bushings or shock mounts, control arms, ball joints, spring seats, etc. Pretty much anyplace that pivots, rubs or two parts come together that need to move. Creaks like that are pretty common in older cars. I have a car that creaks like that but only when it's cold. I figure an old bushing somewhere but I'm not going to bother tracking it down.

If you really want to track it down get a mechanics stethoscope (about $10) and have someone else rock the car. Feel around with the end until you figure out exactly where it's coming from.

Thanks for the input and that's exactly how I described the sound to the service manager.
I've had older cars that did that when the A frame bushings wore out.

Soooooo! After 3 weeks I finally nailed down Thomasville Ford in GA for my so called "Body Strut".
First I spoke to Parts and they said the part was in about a week and a half ago and couldn't figure out why no one set up an appointment.
Then I had them transfer me to the Service section and I finally got an appointment on Friday 17th at 8am.
Asked them to describe the part, "It's got bushings and a shock connected to it", I said does it have a spring on the shock? He said "Yes it does", I said "Is it the McPherson Strut?
His response was "Yes, That's it".
OMG Really. WOW! Talk about pulling teeth for a part description.
Ready for the rest - I may not have a loaner car and will have to sit there for 4 hours waiting.
Gee! I'm sure glad my car is under full bumper to bumper warranty.

Damn I need a beer!

Had the car repaired......or so I thought.
After 6 hours they finally told me the car was ready.
Installed were the strut, spring seats upper and lower.
About a mile down the road I hit a dip and, Oh come on! The same noise was their.
Well I guess you know how I felt the rest of the way home.
Time to find another dealer who's mechanics can diagnose a problem properly.

Again thanks to all for your input and I'll keep you informed.

I would check at the chassis ends of the tension link and lateral link, and the chassis brackets for the front stabilizer bar. You might get temporary relief from a few squirts of WD-40, and if you were to try that one point at a time you might be able to isolate just which point it's coming from. I'd start with the sta-bar brackets & bushings.

Norm,

Thanks so much for the diagram.
That helps me a lot.
Now I can try to narrow down the bad bushing as I believe it to be a bad bushing most likely on the lateral link.

Vince.
