I just bought a used 2020 Mustang GT Premium with 20" Premium Painted Wheels. It looks like the previous owner painted the wheels but they did a crappy job and the paint is bubbling / peeling. I want to repaint them but I'm not sure if the color they are now is the factory color or painted to match the car. I have searched for photos online and the rims looks more like a hyper silver. I haven't run into a Mustang with the same rims locally so I can compare colors up close. Does anyone know the official name of the factory wheel color? I have uploaded a picture. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.

The factory color will come in the form of powder coating. The wheels aren't painted from the factory, so you won't find a matching paint.

Are you absolutely sure they've been painted? I ask because they look just like mine, making allowances for angle and lighting. Can't figure out why someone would 'paint' wheels the same color they already were. Before you go on a wild goose chase, confirm that your factory powder coating / clearcoat isn't failing.

They have definitely been pained. Here are a few close-ups. As you can see, they painted the valve stems and caps.

That is absolutely f'king bizarre. That last picture says he had them stripped, and then applied that crap paint to them. It's anyone's guess what he sprayed them with.

Unfortunately, those are a complete re-do at a wheel repair shop if you ever want them to look right again.

I agree, very bizarre. As you can see in the photos, the color is like a grayish. Whenever you have time, can you send a clear close-up of your wheel. I'm betting the color leans more towards a silver.

Is that just a bad job of a ‘smart’ or home repair, rather than a full refurb ?

Are they consistently bad all over, or are some areas (like the centre’s) OK ?

Have you asked your local Ford dealer? Specifically the specialized department? They would know best about the paint.

I can tell all four rims have been painted since all the valve stems and caps have been painted. Based on that alone tell me they were done by a rookie. A full refurb at a shop will remove the valve stems. One rim is horrendous, the other 3 are bad but not as bad. That is why I originally wanted to find the factory color name so that I can paint that one rim but if whoever did this picked a random color to try to match the car color, I'm screwed. Im going to have to do all 4 rims.

Well, I finally got the rims repaired. Did some research and found the best wheel repair shop here in Miami, FL (Wheels Doctor). Got them powder coated in a darker color than OEM to match the body color. They did an amazing job.

Looks GREAT!! Good idea to powder coat them rather than try to paint them again.

The dealer probably had them fixed up due to curb rash. It’s pretty common so the car looks less abused. They use a mobile service that fills and paints them right on the car. I once saw a guy at my dealer that used a deck of cards, sticking the cards between the tire and wheel in a fan pattern to mask off the tire from over spray. Most customers will never look close enough to notice.
