Ya. That is fair enough. For some reason I was thinking GPS would only work if you had an internet connection - but that flies in the face of what gps is.

I actally just tried google maps in airplane mode and it pinpointed me fine. However, waze, apple maps, and find my friends all say it needs a network connection.

try opening waze for a moment while u have a connection, then close it, then turn airplane mode on. it might need to download data before u initially use it. this explains why i was able to get out of the boonies, since i had a data connection not too far from there.

there were a couple that were buy it now or best offer. i think this one was listed for $60 yesterday. said he had 2 left, i messaged and asked if he would take $50 and said yes. i did the best offer and it was automatically set to take it. its not showing that seller has any left, but i did see another for $65 buy it now or best offer yesterday as well.

Pretty sure I have had waze open when I've been home before, so beats me, but that worked.

So that tells us that if u haven't used waze in a while, you might be SOL trying to get out of a spot that doesn't have service. At least google maps can get you going. Google happens to own waze....

Nice thing with google maps is you can download your route before hand (keeps it for 30 days - which may be waze's limit as well) - so you are golden. I now agree that purchasing nav with the car is questionable. Once you can download in apple maps (for carplay), there would really be no reason, imo.

Are you saying that Ford sold cars with Navigation without knowing if updates would ever be available or if they would cost less than say $1000?

Hard to believe Ford doesn't know what Here can charge Ford customers for updates. Hard to believe because Ford, not Here, would get the hate if those Ford customers found out they couldn't get updates or that the updates cost 10 times what updates for other brands cost.

Not a good sign that Ford is trying to distance themselves by telling customers to contact Ford's suppliers.

How about you (Ford) contact Here and find out how updates will be done and the retail price. I'd be shocked if you guys never put any of that into your contracts with Here. And if you do have it in your contracts, just tell us and don't pawn us off to your suppliers.

I keep Here maps for all of North America on my phone. They are free, never expire and get updated frequently and automatically and the updates are "smart" just adding or deleting what changed rather than replacing an entire area.

thanks for the tip, i downloaded Here for my iphone and downloaded the maps so i'll always have navigation available in the event i lose cell/wifi service.

$150 that is ridiculous! I didn't get the nav in my last Mustang. I bought the Raxiom aftermarket system which would update over the satellite connection frequently for free. Ford charges enough for the Navigation option, they should provide updates for free. For those of us with SD cards, provide a free download and let us write it to the SD card. Stupid prices like this is the reason there are so many available on the black market so much cheaper.

I think I want to do the ipad mini dash install after reading this thread. Said it before and I'll say it again, factory nav is pointlessly out of date.

my last 3 cars had nav. it wasnt until i took a road trip down to baltimore and compared the ETA on both my in car nav and waze. waze was faster by a whole hour. it was the last car i bought with nav.

i even opted for no nav in my wife's new lease, she's had nav in all her cars before that as well. we both use waze now.

I agree with the comments here. Nav just happened to be on the fully loaded Ecoboost that I bought. In general though I think it's a terrible idea to get factory nav. I think auto manufacturers should focus more on the ability to install 3rd party apps and/or extend apps from the phone. I would much rather have Waze on the big Ford screen.
