I am waiting for the upcoming SVT model, but currently I drive a grocery getter and it really annoys me...great car, just the opposite of sporty!

I made the mistake of test driving a used Boss over the weekend and that really reignited my want for a sports car...

My question being, with all the great deals on new base '14 GTs...how much money would I lose if I bought one now then traded it in when the SVT came out? I have seen several base GTs listed online right now near 26k. I'd try to see if I could get lower of course and It's probably a stupid question but I thought I'd ask the forum as all you guys are pretty savvy on this sort of thing. It would also help me brush up on my manual tranny skills...

I would assume that on any short term car purchases as you describe, you'd most likely lose plenty. The only people who make out well in these types of situations are the stealers.

Another thing you will find out is trade in value on a base GT is not very good either.

They make more off of used cars than new ones.

You'd lose a lot.

You get shafted on the trade in of a base GT generally and dealer makes money off that low ball trade in when they sell it.

Go for a used 2012 or 13. Not much difference from a 14 and you won't be eating all the depreciation

Yeah, I guess I should have stated that too. I just wonder if it'd be worth it...the happiness factor is right? Haha I've been waiting 7 years for a sports car because my tastes are always higher than my budget but I am in good enough shape now that I don't want to compromise (hence the wait for the SVT).

Just thinking...if I put a few grand down on a used 2013 with my trade and that also lowers my current payments by $100/mo...by the time I trade it back in, would all that trade in money be gone and all I'd be left with is the 1200 or so I managed to save on payments? Lost cause I know...I just want a sports car and get more impatient by the day! Lol

Personally, if you really can't wait, I'd actually go for an '11 or '12 as they'll be even lower down the depreciation curve. Then, when you want the SVT, sell the '11/'12 privately as you'll get more for it :)

This depends on the state you live in. Often the sales tax reduction that results from trade-in offsets (or close to it) the difference between trade and private party sale price. And it's of course infinitely less hassle to do a trade in. :)

That's interesting, thanks! (apologies, things are clearly a little different this side of The Pond) :)

For what it's worth, I just sold my 2012 GT Premium for 24,500.

What do you think you will be getting in the rumored SVT (with unknown engine) that will far exceed the 2015 GT performance characteristics and be worth the wait?
