I have the auto transmission in my car. And I really like it. But on the freeway at 75 mph it could use another gear in my opinion. All the new sports cars are going that direction so it would have been nice.

I am a retired Ford Transmission Engineer that worked on the 6R Program. The current Ford 6-speed trans is a ZF clone. Ford and ZF had a joint venture at the time the 6R was introduced mainly because Ford wanted to license the ZF design so they could get a 6 speed to market quicker, rather than design one from scratch.

The 6R was rolled out in the Expedition first, then Navigator, F150, then Mustang, in that order. Actually, when the 6R was first put into the Expedition, the Navigator was running the ZF 6-speed. Both transmissions were interchangeable. Ford typically rolls out new transmissions in lower volume vehicles. I know that the Mustang got the 6R last because of packaging issues.

Yes, ZF makes great transmissions, but if you are driving a 6-speed Ford vehicle now, you are essentially driving a ZF trans.:ford:

Which I'm fine with; my 335i was a ZF 6HP something or other and it was fantastic. I understand the 6HP is the particular transmission Ford licensed, so... works for me.

Really curious myself. Hoping to get a Mustang in 1-3 years but kinda holding off until I know the news about this 10 speed.

I would expect if the world wide mustang sales go well they'll put some more rush behind putting the 10 speed in the mustang because of fuel economy. In many countries its a very big difference for just a few grams.

My car became 7k more expensive from 1 year to the next because of tighter CO2 emissions. And thats a car with a base price of 25k, with a 4cil diesel. So even those few grams could make a big difference for the Mustang.

The Coyote doesn't need any more gears. Six is more than sufficient.

Well that an easy thing to say.

If you had the option would you take the 6 speed or the new 10 speed ? And why ?

I would imagine if the 6 speed is 8 years old and the new transmission will be a 10 speed they have a pretty good reason (apart from bragging rights). I would imagine its more refined and it can prolly do some amazing tricks while also bringing fuel consumption down.

I'm sure people said the same thing when the 4speed auto was the norm. It a good thing your comment holds no value. Lets just not advance with technology, who needs that right? Competing with competition is meaningless. Should of just stayed with a live rear axle too?

Cute. Not that your comment has any value either. Opinions, right?

Additional gears are valuable to the extent that they extend the useful range of overall gearing and if the engine doesn't have an adequately-broad torque curve to deal with gear changes without falling out of its power band. With the current 6 speed, 1st is finally usefully low, and 6th is as high as anyone cares to have it. Intermediate gears stay well within the power band during shifts; the car never lugs as it hits the next higher gear.

More is not always better. More gears add weight and complexity. In engineering, you design until you reach a solution that meets all the design criteria, and then you stop before you spend more money on the solution than is required. In my opinion, the six-speed meets that criteria with the V8, though likely not with the V6. Note I said "the Coyote."

And as for the IRS? I wouldn't have bought my 15 had it still had the stick axle. It makes the car. The stick axle didn't meet the need.

I really wish the GTPP had one more gear. 7M/8A seems enough.

Its engineers that engineered the 10 speed so that means there was a need for it. What we do not know yet is if those engineers think that the Mustang also needs those 10 gears.

When I drove the 2014 6 speed auto in the states 2 years back I noticed it wasn't that pleasant for just city cruising. Pretty big RPM drops and pushes in the back at low acceleration. 10 speeds would make slow cruising much more pleasant as RPM doesn't drop as much and gear changes become smoother and quicker.

The fact is the 6 speed auto has to be replaced at some point.

Fuel economy will also be a huge reason to go with the 10 speed.
