Auto Mustangs should of had a ZF 8-Speed in them 2 years ago.. I don't see the point in co-developing their own 10 speed tranny when there's already a reliable, proven widely used unit that turns the behemoths that are the Challenger and Charger into almost sports cars. I wish I had a ZF 8 Speed in my EB.. it'd be awesome, then I wouldn't feel so bad about not getting a manual Lol.

Nailed it! But I'm pretty happy with the 6 speed being so mod friendly with my GT. It should be able to handle forced induction and then some.

Being that the A10 is developed in house..they won't have to pay licensing costs and production rights to ZF, it saves money in the long run.

This....and I expect GM will start to replace the ZF 8-speed in their RWD cars in due time.

I think the GM 8 speed is an inhouse design..I don't think it's a ZF variant.

If that's the case I suspect the A8 will soldier on for a long while with GM in split option packages with the A8 being the lower trim option, the A10 being the upper trim option.

I would question the overall reliability of the A10...compared to a more typical A6.

Why?

This is no more of a shift than when the C4/C6 gave way to the AOD and then the 4R70W, then the 5R55S and 6R80...

The fact is that GM and Ford are both putting their money on this design, especially Ford given that this is going to be THE RWD transmission very soon (bye bye 6R80) would tell me that they're extremely confident in it..especially in putting it behind Powerstroke SuperDuties.

Engineers like to question new technology..., maybe that's just me.

According to my contact, they would never put something bad in a Mustang or F150...these are their bread and butter products. I only question it because of the apparent complexity in a rather light and small housing (unlike big rig transmissions).

Wow....thank you. I could have sworn I'd read that it was a ZF-box in one of the early 6th Gen Camaro reviews. I clearly need to do my homework

I guess at least GM have a large number of cars to spread that 8-speed development cost.

It's more fuel efficient because it can be in the correct gear position more often with more gears. It's like a ghetto CVT.
My father-in-law had a CVT Ford Five Hundred. I rode in the car a couple of times and absolutely hated the way it sounded/felt with a CVT. It was like a car with a slipping clutch.

Does a 10 speed automatic inherently reduce the RPM shift points? So no more high revs if I punch it? That wouldn't be any fun.

No, because it doesn't change where peak power happens.

However, what it does mean is that the RPM's have the potential to not drop as far (due to closer ratios) so that we're actually producing peak power longer...

Let's just say that a 2018 GT with the A10 still makes it's peak stock power at 6,500 RPM. The transmission hits that, and shifts, however instead of dropping waaay down below peak, and then having to climb back up...it only drops say..800 RPM, so in a WOT blast you're right back at peak power fast.

That's what the A10 can do..keep you at peak power longer..which means it's gonna pull like a son of a bitch.
