1 gear popping out

The Tremec TR6060 on my Blackwing would do it on occasion for the first few months. I could not figure out a reason (got the car brand new) and then it stopped doing it altogether. I've owned dozens of high performance manual cars and have never nerfed a transmission so bending a shift fork seemed like a strange possibility. It was almost like the transmission needed to break in.

OP - how many miles on yours?

Happens to me about once or twice a year on my 2020 R that Ive had since new. Now with about 9500 miles. I attribute it to lazy shifting.

Keep telling yourself that. It first gear, it is not lazy shifting! You are either in or out of gear. I told myself that it was that piece of junk Ford shift linkage and bought a Barton stage 3 shifter to solve the issue, NOT! It still pops out of second gear if it gets load in deceleration as in down shifting or just driving in second gear and let off the throttle it pops out of gear. Never while accelerating, put it to the floor and it pulls hard bang second it will brake the tires lose, and I can red line it and it is great, just don't back off in second because it will not stay in gear. OH well, I guess it will be new transmission time this winter. Instead of working on motorcycles this winter it will be a mustang project in the shop. I am looking at the Calimer stage 3, because I only want to do this once. Calimer is a bolt in replacement so I can use my Barton shifter and the one-piece aluminum drive shaft, just have to upgrade the clutch system.

I can tell you it isn't "lazy shifting" on my account. Sitting at a red light, put it solidly into gear, start moving, bangs out of gear. Only did it a couple times since i've owned the car, but, not right.

Not an uncommon issue. My 2017 would occasionally do it, the Tremec could "fool" you into believing it was all the way in first when it really wasn't, then would pop out when you released the clutch. I just just learned to give it a good shove into first and take my hand off the shifter before letting the clutch out so if it did pop it wouldn't grind the gear.

Those with GT's, y'all have a Chinese made MT82 transmission. Not the Tremec. Completely different.

OP - how many miles on yours?

About 40k. I got transmission serviced about 5k miles ago and didn’t notice anything different so I’m guessing it’s not fluid related.

I’m probably just making a mountain out of a molehill. It’s not really a problem I can replicate. It just happens so randomly.

Been thinking about it for the longest time. That MGW shifter setup looks like a work of art. That and a new steering wheel are at the top of my list. I love the alcantara but I live in a hot state. The fabric just makes my hand sweat so bad. A nice cool leather wrapped wheel is what I want.

How much labor to install that shifter? Looks like a bigger job than I can do in my parking lot.

It's been more than 5 years since I had my MGW installed but I seem to remember it being 3 or 4 hours of shop time. I installed an MGW on a Boss 302 on my back in the driveway and it wasn't fun but I survived. I think the worst part was reinstalling the big rubber boot thing, which took a lot of trial and error (and cursing!).

I paid $300 to get mine installed, top notch job. Just a thought, driving gloves, not full fingered. I bought a nice pair of cycling gloves for about $15.

As for the alcantara wheel, after about 10k miles and despite cleening it with Sonax a few times, it just never looked/felt great to me so I bought a leather wheel from Steeda.

Can't say anything about the MGW shifter install but I do know that the hardest part is getting the old Ford shifter out. I installed the Barton stage 3, and it wasn't the most fun job. I have the steering wheel you are talking about and I like it. I have another vehicle with a smooth leather surface, and it makes my hands stick to it in the summer. I don't get that with the alcantara wheel.
