Anyone have an issue with 1st gear popping out when at a stoplight? Sometimes when I put it in gear, and then take my hand off the shifter, it jumps out to neutral.

I have been making a conscious effort to make sure it’s fully seated now, it’s possible I was being sloppy the first few times. But it happens more than any other manual car I have had. Maybe once every month or 3 weeks.

Doesn’t seem like anything to worry about yet, but that’s how transmission issues usually start. A tiny problem that slowly progresses. The first gear is a bit tricky in these, so it may just be a characteristic of the transmission.

My Tremec (Mach 1 but same trans) is a little finicky and popped out a few times right after I bought the car. I agree, its a little tricky. But I have learned to be way more deliberate when I put in first gear and don't have the issue any more. Have put over 12k miles on it in a year since. Maybe a side effect of my MGW shifter too, not sure, never has been an issue since I upgraded to that...

Not first gear but second gear while it is under load down shifting or if I am just driving in town and in second gear and back off the gas it will pop out of second gear. I just bought a Barton Industries short throw shifter to see if that will cure the problem.

I don't have it installed yet. I didn't have this problem until I added power to the engine. Long tube catted headers 3" cat back MBRP race exhaust 2018 intake manifold CAI and an Auto Mafia Racing tune. After that I noticed it would pop out of second when I would down shift and load that gear. I am thinking that the ford shifter is not solid enough mounted.

Common Causes of Shifter Jumping Out of First Gear

CauseDescription
Worn Shifter ForksThe shift forks might be worn or damaged, preventing proper engagement of the gear.
Worn SynchronizersSynchronizers help gear engagement; if they're worn, they can hinder the gear from staying engaged.
Faulty Transmission MountIf the transmission mount is damaged, it may cause movement that disengages the gear when accelerating or decelerating.
Low Transmission FluidInsufficient fluid levels can lead to poor lubrication, causing erratic behavior in the transmission, including jumping out of gear.
Worn Gears or Dog TeethThe gears or their connecting teeth may be worn down, making it difficult for the transmission to maintain engagement in first gear.
Shifter Linkage IssuesProblems with the shifter linkage (the rods or cables connecting the shifter to the transmission) can affect gear engagement.
Clutch ProblemsA malfunctioning clutch might not fully engage or disengage, contributing to issues with gear retention, especially under load.
Potential Solutions

  1. Inspect the Transmission Fluid: Check levels and condition. If low or dirty, change it.
  2. Check for Worn Components: Look for worn shift forks, gears, or synchronizers.
  3. Examine the Linkage: Ensure that the shift linkage is properly connected and functioning.
  4. Inspect the Transmission Mount: Ensure it's intact and securely fastened.

I had a used tremec which was wrecked and it had a bent shift rod which would cause it to pop out of 1st. Took a while to figure out. My vote is something wrong with the forks

Mine does it on occasion. It’s been doing it since I’ve had the car going on eight years now. Typically when the car is cold and I don’t fully get 1st engaged. It’s a me fault not the cars.

I have a 2021 Mach1, bought it with 9k miles in 2023 (I'm the 2nd owner). I've had mine jump out of first a hand full of times, it very jarring. I don't think mine is bent shift forks as it never did this the first year and a half I had the car, and I don't beat on the car either.

I finally got started on the Barton shifter install today, and as I have been told and now have experienced, that one damned bolt that attaches to the shifter rod on the transmission, is a bugger to remove. So, the old shifter is out and tomorrow I will install the Barton. I didn't remove the drive shaft or the exhaust, and I don't think it would have made a great deal of difference anyway. I wonder if anyone else had an issue with the O2 sensors being in the way of installing the transmission lower support block? I removed the three bolts on the triangle bracket then installed the longer bolts and set the two parts in at the same time. No big deal. Otherwise, I would have had to remove the O2 sensors. Would anyone want to buy a stock MT82 shifter linkage? LOL.

Sounds logical. It’s not a huge issue yet. I have some work planned for a few months from now. I will add transmission fluid and service and inspection to the list while it’s on the lift.

What’s the labor time on an issue like that in general?

I have about 5 1/2 hours in removing the old shifter and I have a two-post lift. Almost two hours just on that one bolt, I had to modify a socket and use a ratchet strap to hold the linkage out of the way.

If its a shift fork, the transmission (and exhaust, and driveshaft) comes out.
