So is Ford going to make the press buy their own cars to test?

I've never seen a car release go so far down to the wire before there was the press had driven it. Cars are almost in the first few lucky owner's hands, and the press still hasn't been allowed anything more than a ride-along. In a normal release, the press would have driven the car 6 months ago.

Does anyone have any idea what Ford is up to with this? It's more than a little odd.

I'd sooner guess that the press has been allowed (or will soon) to drive them, there's just an embargo placed on publishing the review. That happens a lot in this business. The press is just sitting on their hands until Ford tells them that its ok to publish. Why Ford is making everyone wait this long is real question here...

Agreed - think how many more people would be jumping on the pre-order bandwagon if there were real reviews of the car out there.

I speculate the PP and MP1 cars that are out there right now are likely being tested now (or have already been tested) and we'll see stories in the next month in the major auto magazines.

I honestly think Ford doesn't car about getting reviews on this vehicle out there for some reason.

The 50th anniversary was a soft production, they don't have tons of TV advertising of the new Mustang, and they didn't release any important figures before the order banks were open and a while after that.

I think for the first time a new Mustang will have it's initial reviews come at the hands of the actual owners. That is good for the public to see a more unbiased review; but I would have thought Ford would prefer the journalists to try them out and review them first as as usually done.

Even if magazines and performance shops have PP type vehicles you won't see reviews on them for a few months down the road as magazine publications are months behind the real world and shops will sell their information to the magazines. This is bad for the enthusiast looking to make decisions.

I just think Ford marketing is off their game with the release of such an iconic vehicle for the company. Just my opinion.

The magazines could possibly have their articles already just waiting for word from Ford so they can publish them. You wouldn't have to wait for months later.

Its actually not that abnormal, its probably because you have been following it so close... as recently the BMW M4s and M3s were in customers hands before the first press drives were released. No doubt ford is holding an event, either already or in the next couple weeks. and it only takes the journalists a few days at most to write an article. then release all together on an embargo date.

As enthusiasts we have to remember the marketing machine isnt targeted at us, considering most on this site know all of the key information better than the salespeople at dealerships... and Ford wont start machine full speed until a customer can actually go to a dealership and see a car. the last thing you want to do is make a connection to the product via advertising then have the shelves empty

Why market something that you cannot buy?

Until production ramps up and cars are on dealer lots there is very little reason to spend marketing dollars.

Look how many people are upset that their order isn't getting built.

Imagine how many more folks out there would get upset they couldn't get the car now.

I usually rely on magazine tests(which usually comes out before cars hits dealerships), to get information prior to a new model's release. That way I can get an idea of impressions/problems/issues before I buy. Ford has been very close-mouthed with info on the car-making me and everyone wait while they dole out info once per week over many months. I find that rude and disrespectful to the customer.

I was planning to buy a Mustang for Xmas. With Ford's bad attitude-they can now wait for this purchase to take place. It will be well into 2015 before I buy-if at all.
