As an avid AutoX competitor looking to drop as much unsprung weight as possible, 2pc rotors have been near the top of my build list. Thankfully, I was able to connect with Jeff Ritter @ Essex Parts, who happened to be working on bringing to market an AP Racing 15" option for the S550. A couple emails back and forth and a few phone calls later, Jeff had these rotors along with newly released Ferodo DS2500 pads to mate with on the way.
Fast forward to today, and I've got these lovely parts to install:
Of course, I immediately did a weight comparison:
Needless to say, mission accomplished as far as weight reduction goes! I was expecting about 10lbs/corner savings and that's exactly what I got.
Just for kicks, I did a pad weight comparison too:
I was more concerned with pad *coverage* though, as this was a problem I experienced earlier this year, after planning to run a set of Carbotech AX6 GT500 15" pads. Although they fit, the backing plate and pad design were completely different, and didn't give me an optimal braking surface. Not so with these beauties!
Look closely at the Ferodo part and note the code:
FoMoCo FER 4446/2 FF - it shows up somewhere else, too:
At least with this iteration, it appears that the backing plate used is a Ford part, so the fit is perfect.
Of course, like most competition pads, edges are not shaved like stock, so pad surface available for braking is greater:
Here's another coverage shot:
... and a rough estimate of thickness:
~ 40mm - sorry, digital caliper battery was dead
Mounted, pad goes right to the outer rotor edge:
... and as close to the interior edge as possible, too:
Requisite mounted-on-car shot:
I'll be bedding the pads in tomorrow, but unfortunately won't have any real-life competition feedback for a few more weeks. I'll definitely post up impressions once I get a chance to use them in anger.
In the meantime, for anybody else looking to drop a whole bunch of unsprung rotating mass off the front very easily, I highly recommend you check the Essex Parts/AP Racing option out!
