Hey guys Just installed a dash cam in my stang today. No ugly cords running down to your cigarette lighter either! Wanted to give you guys some tips on where and how I did it. I know there are some DIY's out for Radar detectors but they have you shoving stuff into your rearview mirror. I actually pulled the wire out and traced it back to splice into it back in the head liner so it would be more concealed.
here are my steps
1. Pull your dome lights off just tug on it, it should come off fairly easy no bolts to worry about.
2. unbolt your rear view mirror (Torx bit/star bit) it should slide towards you and come off disconnect connector.
3. Use needle nose pliers to pull plastic strap that holds wiring harness for Rear view mirror under your dome lights. Pull connector out about 6-8 inches out from underneath your headliner towards your windshield
4. Get a cigarette lighter with usb power port and break it appart and use the PCB. Solder your + and - wires where they need to go. Tape up the PCB with Electrical tape(not required but rather not it grounding or shorting to anything up in your dome lights).
5. Cut electrical tape to expose wires at the plastic strap use a blue cable splice with your + wire from your modified cigarette lighter power source running towards dome lights. Tap into the brown/yellow sripe of your mirror harness (switched 12vdc will only come on when ignition is on)
6. I used the black ground from the dome light for my ground and again used the blue splice's connectors to run to your PCB (cigarette lighter).
7. Use a 3' or shorter USB to Mini USB cable to run to your dash cam or whatever device you're powering.
8. Shove it into the dome light housing and re attach all your hardware route your rear view mirror and your new usb cable thru the cable routing channel for the mirror.
Done! here are some pics of the finished product and some pics of the install let me know if anyone needs any help/pointers or some more pics. Enjoy! I'll post some more pictures tomorrow from the inside....(there isn't much to see its all hidden!) anything you guys want to see in a picture let me know and i'll modify the post for you.
