GM sold the data from my Z06 to Lexus Nexus. I only found out because when I did a rate check with GEICO, car insurance was 3x higher than I was currently paying. When I inquired it said that it was due to information from Lexus Nexus. That totally makes sense because the car was sold with 3900 miles, after 5 years of use on it. Most of that on a dyno or a racetrack...

Needless to say all my vehicles with telematic modules have had the modules physically removed. No error messages or notifications. Only hint is the telematics switch is grayed out on the screen, and Forscan fails to communicate with the module. If I unplug any other connector in the car, the dash would light up like a Christmas tree. That makes it ultra fishy that it doesn't even list a notification.

FWIW, I believe it weighed 3/4 of a pound. Stage 6 weight reduction.

LOL nothing political about it. Just putting a news story out there. To me, it’s not a left right middle thing. It’s a privacy thing and what constitutes an “illegal search” under the constitution. There’s an off-topic lounge thread on the Flock cameras as well that has been dormant for a bit, I posted the story there as well. There’s a fine line between the ability to prevent crimes (or at least be able to track down who did it) and watching every person’s every single move. It’s too much for me, I don’t like it. Others may see differently.

I’ve also seen some stories about a firm that was started by former overseas military personnel (I will not name which country as that could start a political discussion), but they basically have developed software that can alter camera footage without leaving a trace that the video was altered. So, in theory, they could manipulate the video to show someone committing a crime that didn’t actually commit a crime. That’s some scary shit right there. Doing more research to verify that what I’ve read is legit but so far it seems to be a true story.

For 2018 year Mustangs, I think I read that only cars with the optional 401A package have the data modem. Can anybody verify that? I have 400A.

Are there any other modules that communicate with Ford, or the internet in general? My car has GPS and Sirius XM Satellite, and I used to receive traffic updates and weather through some method of communication.

If you have an app you can use to unlock your car doors you're guaranteed to have the modem.
If your infotainment offers an option to turn on wifi you have a modem.

Traffic updates with Sirius XM are beamed from the satellite and are only one way.

Otherwise I don't believe previous Mustangs had them.

The modem is behind the subwoofer/right trunk liner, you can pop that off and see if you have one if you really want to check!

Just pull the fuse in the passenger side footwell fuse block to disable the telematics. Thread here:

If I remember correctly, they are on 18+ cars and are located in the trunk, drivers side by the tail light under the trim/carpet. The above link has all the details. Pulling the fuse kills it with no ill effects to the car other than you lose all "connected" services like remote start, OTA etc.

This is the truth about tracking!

The TCU in a Mustang is only the Transmission Control Unit, and it has nothing to do with tracking or data sharing. It controls shift timing, line pressure, and adaptive learning on automatic cars—period. It has no GPS, no cellular modem, and no ability to transmit anything. The only system that can send telematics data is the FordPass Connect modem, and even that requires the owner to opt in before any information is shared with insurance companies. Manual Mustangs don’t even have a TCU. Whoever said the TCU is a tracking device is confusing it with the telematics modem, which is a completely different component.

If didn't ask for it to be used, then it is not being used. So, stop all this nonsense!

Who said anything about a TCU? It’s the modem. And if you think because you don’t opt in they’re not tracking your data, you’re a fool. Pull a Lexis Nexis report on yourself and see how much info is out there. Insurance companies (and others) subscribe to LN and use that data. Where does that info come from? Your car and any apps associated with it. Don’t be so naive…

Car is safe. Flip phone doesn't have apps that track you but I believe phone carrier knows where and when your flip phone is near towers and retains that info for some period of time. If flip phone is important to you, older frequencies are being retired. Major US carriers have already dropped 2G and 3G and T-Mobile already has plans to phase out 4G in some areas. I don't know if you can get flip phones on 4G or 5G when the carriers drop what your current phone is on.
