In Oregon it is illegal for a dealer to sell a car without cats. I bet in N.Y. it is the same.

States may have their own laws and some states are stricter than others, but I'm pretty sure that it's a Federal law not to sell a car that came with cats without them. Of course you seldom hear of any enforcement...

If it was a Ford dealer it's their job to make sure your car is compliant with the laws. I'm sure Ford corporate would not like hearing that one of their dealers is selling illegal cars. It should be on the dealers dime too.

Do you have an oil catch can? If so, does it need to be emptied? That will do it.

Unless I missed a deleted post, he never said he bought the car catless from the Ford Dealership. Since he has been mostly quiet on that point, it is likely they were removed after he bought it.

I think you might be right. And if so he’s DEFINITELY going to have warranty problems.

Hello; The removal of cats in a state which does strict emission checks will be a problem. Not likely the specific cause of exhaust smoke. .
The car has over 60K miles and if memory serves is of a model year which is known for oil burning.
The OP should start to keep tabs on oil consumption and also have a regular plan to check oil levels say two or three times a week.
i agree with the member about valve seals. Running with throttle on then throttle off creates a lot of intake manifold vacuum. Ford had such a problem with the Coyote V8's in the F-150 pickups around 2019. A step Ford took was to alter the throttle body programming a bit.
To avoid some of that intake vacuum the throttle body plate would not close all the way. That way a slight opening would reduce the intake vacuum and so reduce sucking oil past rings or valve seals. Adding to the overall situation it is my understanding Ford uses low tension piston rings.

Of course, with the miles and some hard running the rings and seals could be worn.

Lastly, anytime I suspect increased oil use one of the first things I do is replace the PCV valve. Some members have already mentioned this, and it is a good regular thing to do.
