Ive owned two corvettes, and am currently on my 3rd Mustang (11 RTR, 12 Boss 302, 18 GT PP). if it's going to be a fun weekend car and is going to see track use, get yourself a narrow body Z51. Consumables are much cheaper than a GS, and you'll still need much faster then 97% cars out there.

I currently own a C7 Z51 2LT with all the gadgets and added a SC to it. Its a beast even at just 5 PSI and the Z51 with its mag ride and extra suspension settings are pretty cool but I really don't use them. Just sport mode 90% of the time. I do love the PDR and can copy the videos to my computer to watch. When in Texas I was literally hitting 130 every day on the open roads real quick then back down to semi normal driving. But I recently moved to Hawaii and there is no place to open her up and with pot holes forget it. I have been in 3 corvettes in 8 yrs and love em but its time for a change and I need to lower my payments as Hawaii is sooooo damn expensive in all things. I have a build in for a 19 VB premium with no power packs or mag ride as like I said they are cool but don't really use them. So i put that money into the other packages, upgraded stereo, black accent, upgraded seats, safety shit, etc. Honestly I do consider the stang a bit of a down grade but know I will like the car very well. Just wanted to stay V8 on a good price. But with the SC there were not many cars that were able to keep up with me and again that was only 5 psi. I cant remember what the C7 felt like without the SC its been so long but I have driven a 2018 GT and there is no way it felt as strong as the vette did even stock. A vette on E85 would be a killer too. But I also consider these 2 cars to be in different areas and should not really be compared to each other, just wish I could have both but $$$$ dictates life.

New GT should be here in about 20 days, I hope.

Plus the C7 is a lot heavier than previous year Corvettes, so it no longer has the huge advantage it did in the past..
Uh, no. The C7 is slightly heavier than the C6, but hundreds of pounds lighter than the GT 350.

Not a track or drag strip guy, but I had the C7 Z06/Z07 on my radar before ending up my S550 Mustang.
Such a great looking, great performing car.

C7 Z51 weight is about 3520 lbs and GT350 is about 3760, so yes, the difference is about 200 lbs. About like having a passenger vs. not. What I was saying is that the difference is no longer huge like it used to be.

My C5 weighs about 3120 lbs. 600 lbs is a LOT and you really, really can tell an enormous difference when you drive the car. 200 lbs is not nearly as significant.

I think that should clarify what I was trying to say. The C7 and C8 really aren't that light any more. Chevy is busy making small luxury cruisers rather than lightweight sporty cars.

A 1lt Z51 weights 3444 lbs with full liquids including 18.5 gallons of fuel. Also consider the vette has 2.5 more gallons of fuel over the shelby. Thats extra 21 lbs of fuel and 70 more miles of range if averaging 28 mpg on highway. Some people get 30 mpg which is ridiculous.

A 3LT Z51 (top trim) vs a track pack was 338 lbs difference.

I don't think the gap between the Vette and Mustang has grown. The '03 Mach 1 was around 3450. About 300lbs more than your C5 Z06.

If I remember right the C6 ZO6 with the ZO7 package scaled at 3100 lbs with the LS7 engine, C6 ZR1 scaled around 3370 lbs with 638 hp. At that time Mustang S197 was around 3600 lbs and the shelby gt 500 was around 3850 lbs. Back then the gap was little higher but we are yet to see the new GT 500. You should be able to feel the off the line acceleration and handling difference even with 300 lbs weight difference. Rolling though, not so much.

I see the weight you found for the Corvette is lower than what I saw in my search. I believe C&D's weight. Yes the Mustang has been getting porkier every redesign. Too bad that the Corvette is also getting heavier with every new version. The Corvette development money/resources are not going into keeping it light. Rather the work is on cool electronic gizmos and removable tops. The Mustang cabin got bigger, so at least some of the weight made the car more comfortable. The C7 Corvette seems to have a smaller cabin than the C5, but yet weight went up quite a bit.

I wouldn't even consider a 2003 Mach 1. Whatever that car weighs is meaningless to me. Maybe what I'm noticing is that the GT350 doesn't seem to be as heavy as it is when you drive it, but IMO the C7 feels heavy on the road.

You can't keep adding horsepower, torque and heat without corresponding changes to handle these things. Even a newer 911 turbo is over 3500 lbs.
