I'm hearing that even with catyletic converters the only long tube system that will pass vehicle emissions inspecion is kooks with green cats? Can anyone verify?

There's been discussions about this in several threads, but from what I remember reading, not even those will pass emissions.

How often does NY do emission checks?

whoa...very interesting. I assumed the catted headers would pass emissions. Now you know why they say what they do about assuming...

I was very hopeful catted headers would pass...

I have read both, that catted ARH would pass and then that they wouldn't. This is one of the only things holding me up from headers. I will be moving soon and don't want to take the risk of not being able to pass emissions if I end up in an emissions state- SC is awesome and doesn't have inspections. I think Kooks Green cats are the only ones that guarantee you pass, but they are extremely proud of their headers lol

Once a year, I don't understand how having cats won't pass the emissions test

can't you guys bribe the inspectors like we do down here in texas? it's $100 universally at anywhere you can find to do it around the city.

Yeah this, I was going to say this as well lol...I'm going to get catted headers as well.

once a year?

In Cali, we don't do emissions 6 years after buying a new car, then every 2 years after.

I thought we were bad lol

Catted headers technically WILL NOT pass emissions because they are not 50 or even 49 state legal since they have been moved from the OEM location. Now, some tuners can set the tune in such a way that when connected to the scanner for the readiness testing they can get you a "PASS" reading. Some states this cannot be done in, like CA, NY, VA and some others. I'm not sure off the top of my head which states they cannot "trick", but the 3 I listed I know for sure.

The difference with the Kooks Green Cats is that a tune is not needed with those, so you do not have to turn off the rear O2's which will get you a "FAIL" on the readiness test.

Here in PA we have both inspection and emissions testing. To pass the inspection part you are supposed to have cats in their correct factory location. You can have a friend pass a car cause it is just a visual inspection of everything.

For emissions the car is hooked up to a computer through the OBD2 port and can't have any codes showing as active and all the system checks have to be showing as passed. (you can have one not-ready pending and still pass, just most shops don't like to tell you this) You can't bribe this part since it is hooked up to a state computer confirming VIN.

So as long as you don't have any fault codes showing for the O2 sensors you would be ok in PA. In my last car I just removed those DTCs from the PCM as part of the tune, not sure if we can do that with the Mustangs or not?

So people are just assuming they won't pass? I've had numerous different cars/setups with long tubes in NC and regardless of the cat being used I have never failed a test. If you don't have cats you will absolutely fail if you're being checked.

Now, if your state has something saying you'll fail based on factory placement, or some other crazy rule, that's on you. Obviously a crappy tune would cause issues as well.

I think you can still trick the computer to pass electronically, but I think in Cali you still need to pass the sniffer...I remember AED was able to do this with the 2011 and up stangs, I am sure other tuners are able to as well. I also heard they do not do the sniffer anymore in Cali but that is just something I heard. Not 100 on that.

Why would someone buy catted headers if it won't pass. I would run catless and then before the inspection, I would have a custom setup with the stock cats welded, so that I could just bolt them on. But....in FL we don't have to deal with this crap:headbang:

I have Corsa Xtreme...so that's why I'm considering catted headers.

I also don't have emissions for 6 years, so that's another reason why.

I went with catted to avoid the fuel smell. Plus, the difference in loudness and power is very minimal.

The last I knew as long as there was no check engine light or any lights on then I would pass the emissions . Before this 2015 gt I had a 05 GTO with catted long tubes and it passed with flying colors, so I'm trying to figure out the situation here a little more
