With all the test fitting and prototyping that you had to do that sounds like the best way to go. I was thinking about trimming off the lip if it didn't fit back in but I managed to bend it back into its spot. Showed that peace of plastic whose boss after the car cut my hand in 3 places :doh:It could certainly be done that way as well! I actually did it this way when I first disassembled my dash. I modified the tray to remove the lip and guide posts. That way every time I need to take apart the dash I no longer have to fight to get the tray out.
